唧唧复唧唧，

木兰当户织。

不闻机杼声，

惟闻女叹息。

问女何所思，

问女何所忆。

Clink, clink, and more clink,

MLan weaves in the door.

No loom sound you hear

But her sigh, sigh more.

Girl, what’s that you think?

What are you sad for?

女亦无所思，

女亦无所忆。

昨夜见军帖，

可汗大点兵。

军书十二卷，

卷卷有爷名。

阿爷无大儿，

木兰无长兄，

愿为市鞍马，

从此替爷征。

Nothing do I think;

Nothing I’m sad for.

Th’ order came last night

That Khan would attack.

In twelve rolls is there

Father’s name, alack!

Father’s no big son;

Nor big bro have I.

I’d buy weapons there

And for Dad I’ll hie.

东市买骏马，

西市买鞍鞯，

南市买辔头，

北市买长鞭。

She’ll buy a horse east

And west saddles buy

South reins she’ll purchase

And north a whip try.

旦辞爷娘去，

暮宿黄河边，

不闻爷娘唤女声，

但闻黄河流水鸣溅溅。

旦辞黄河去，

暮至黑山头，

不闻爷娘唤女声，

但闻燕山胡骑鸣啾啾。

At dawn I leave home

’nd sleep by Ho at night

My parents’ call I can’t hear

But hear Ho splashing water, light, light.

At dawn I leave Ho

’nd reach Black Hill at night

My parents’ call I can’t hear

But hear Hun cavalry cry: plight, plight.

万里赴戎机，

关山度若飞。

朔气传金柝，

寒光照铁衣。

For the war afar

They rush thro’ Pass Hill.

Chill pierces the pot;

Their armors feel chill.

将军百战死，

壮士十年归。

归来见天子，

天子坐明堂。

We’re back in ten years;

Generals did fall!

Now back, we see Lord;

Lord sits in the hall.

策勋十二转，

赏赐百千强。

可汗问所欲？

Regarded as the best,

Have best prize she can.

What’s her will asks Khan.

木兰不用尚书郎，

愿驰明驼千里足，

送儿还故乡。

I want no high rank or pay,

I'd ride a camel back home,

Back home all the way.

爷娘闻女来，

出郭相扶将。

Hearing she comes back,

Out her parents rush.

阿姊闻妹来，

当户理红妆。

Hearing she comes back,

Hair her big sis brush.

小弟闻姊来，

磨刀霍霍向猪羊。

Hearing she come back,

her young bro kill sheep, hush, hush.

开我东阁门，

坐我西阁床，

脱我战时袍，

著我旧时裳。

当窗理云鬓，

对镜贴花黄。

出门看火伴，

火伴皆惊忙。

Open my east door,

I’ll sit in bed west,

Take off my armor,

As old, I’ll be dressed.

I’ll comb by the sill,

Make up with the glass,

And go see my mates.

They’re surprised: alas!

同行十二年，

不知木兰是女郎。

Together twelve years,

We don’t know you are a lass!

雄兔脚扑朔，

雌兔眼迷离；

双兔傍地走，

安能辨我是雄雌。

The male hare runs on;

The female’s eyes fail:

The two make a pair;

Which is male, which is female?
