Hello, dear listeners, I am Prof. Zheng Xinmin from Shanghai International Studies University. In today's programme, we are going to talk about the importance of effective English classroom organization or management.


Being an English teacher myself, I fully recognize teaching is not only a meaningful but also a challenging profession for many reasons. For one thing, English teachers are expected to fill many roles, some of which have little to do with the subject matter knowledge (SMK) or content knowledge(CK) that we teach. By saying so, I don't mean English teachers' SMK or CK is unimportant, but I mean the way  English teachers deliver SMK or CK is more important. The way English teachers deliver SMK or CK has much to do with their pedagogical content knowledge(PCK), which I will illustrate in the upcoming programme in detail. 


Well, let's suppose a certain English teacher is well learned. He/she has a good command of English subject matter knowledge, but he/she is unable to use effective strategies to deliver SMK or CK, he/she is doomed to suffer from students' complaints or even may lose promotion chance. Therefore, I would argue that it is teacher's leadership, which is the powerful glue, that can help English teachers to conduct their lessons well, in other words, teacher's leadership lies in the ability to organize themselves, and their students effectively.


To be more specific, I think the effective English teachers perform many functions that can be organized into the following three major roles:

  • making wise choices about the most effective instruction strategies to employ

  • designing classroom curriculum to facilitate student learning, and

  • making effective use of classroom management techniques


Well, to conclude today's programme, the above description indicates that English teachers' classroom organization is one of the critical ingredients of effective teaching, and it is clear that effective English teachers have a wide array of instructional strategies at their disposal, are skilled at identifying and articulating the proper sequence and pacing of their SMK or CK, and are skilled in classroom management techniques.  Thank you for listening.
