beat / flog a dead horse字面意思都是打一匹死马，马都死了，再怎么打马也不会起来干活，所以beat / flog a dead horse是指徒劳无益、白费心机。

plough the sand

spin one's wheel

spin是快速旋转的意思，spin one's wheel直接意思就是轮子在旋转。这该怎么理解呢？大家联想一下车胎陷在泥地的情况吗？司机尽全力踩油门发动车，但车胎还是陷在泥里空转出不来。

所以spin one's wheel是表示花了很多时间或精力却毫无进展的情况，可以解释为劳而无功。

reinvent the wheel

再来一个和wheel有关的表达，reinvent the wheel。reinvent意思是以新形式出现、重新发明、重新创作。这个短语字面上就是再发明一次轮子，对已经存在的东西，再发明一次，就是在白费力气做重复的工作。

所以reinvent the wheel = to do sth in a wholly and drastically new way, often unnecessarily，解释为多此一举、从事不必要的重复工作。
