“The other day”的意思不是“另一天”，那它到底是哪天？

The other day

the other day类似于recently，意思是“前两天”、“不久以前”。“另外某一天”可以用another day来表示，它还含有“又一天，再一天”的意思。

I saw your brother the other day.

前几天，我看到了你哥哥。

One fine day

At some unspecified or unknown time

在某个未知的时间

从字面上看是美好的一天，但其引申义为“突然有一天”,“总有一天”。

I hadn't seen him for ten years. Then one fine day he just turned up.

我有10年没见他了，突然有一天他出现了。

Pass the time of day

pass the time of day是个习惯用语，意思为“寒暄”、“问候”、“聊一会”。

He stopped his car to pass the time of day with Mary.

他停下车与玛丽寒暄（了一会）。
