“我在等你”老外并不说 “I'm waiting you ”?

昨天同事Julia 接待一位外宾

说了句 My boss is waiting you

编编八卦地望了一眼

老外明显一不太开心的亚子

What's the problem?

在接待人的场合

老外们可不说 waiting sb. 

而是说 expecting sb.哦

Wait 和 Expect都有“等”的意思

那它们有啥区别？ 

 Wait 等待

Expect 期待，指望

用 wait 的情况：

你在等待一件（你主观认为）必然会发生的事情

比如等公车等地铁

等天黑

等取号

I'm waiting for the bus/ metro.

I'm waiting for the ticket.

Wait 强调时间的消逝

面对老板的贵宾，

julia 说：My boss is waiting you.

一是带了点指责对方不准时的意思

二是这里 wait 还传达出了上级对下级说的口吻...

用expect的情况是

1. 知道/期待某事会发生，

但这件事也有可能不发生

比如下雨了

没带伞的你希望可以打到的士

I'm expecting a taxi here.

比如你为心上人精心打扮了一番

你期待他夸赞你

You're expecting a compliment from him.

而不说 

you're waiting a compliment  from him.

Hi, Shaun is expecting you，

I'll take you right though.

您好，肖恩在里面等您，

我带您进去。
