Why don't the roads of Tianjin go as they do in most other cities?

Whenever asked about that, I am always annoyed, as anybody else who grows up in Tianjin would be.

Where is due south?

We rarely use east, west, north, and south,

We only say forward, backward, left, and right,

Isn't it easier to tell where left is?

When asked for directions, local people, especially those who live in the old district, tend to say 'left' or 'right' instead of 'east' or 'west'.

Why is that? We have to start with Tianjin's roads.

When you look at a map, you will find that the roads which go due south, north, east or west are basically found around the formerly walled downtown area, and they were built after the city wall was removed.

Besides them, you can hardly find any roads that run due south or north. Moreover, roads along which you can go straight to the end are sparse.

This is why Tianjin people are reluctant to tell directions. Even if they use a compass, you are likely to get lost, because you might head in the wrong direction while walking along the road.

Why aren't the roads of Tianjin straight? This is because of the Haihe River and the foreign concessions in Tianjin.

Tianjin is different from many other historic Chinese cities. With a history of 600 years, it was mainly built to defend the capital, Beijing.

The city where the garrison lived was not comparable to the one where the emperor lived. The latter featured a square design whereas the former didn't have a particular layout.

Beijing

Xi'an

The old city of Tianjin was built originally on the west bank of the Haihe River, next to the intersection of the South Canal, the North Canal and the Ziya River. But the residents at that time did not live directly along the Haihe River system. When the population increased, people began to live by the water, and the city had to develop to fit in with the Haihe River.

People in those early settlements had to consider not only convenience but also the dangers of flooding, so the city developed in irregular patterns.

Tianjin

Therefore, Tianjin's roads mainly run parallel or perpendicular to the Haihe River.

In the late 1800s, the areas along both banks of the river gradually became concessions. At its peak, nine countries had concessions in the city. Foreign countries planned the roads in their concessions as they saw fit. This is why the roads are not straight.

Here we have to mention Jiefang North Road. The buildings along this road are rich in style: Gothic, Romanesque, Germanic, Russian, and other Western architectural styles.

Finally, I want to say that

we Tianjin people do have a sense of direction.

We just do not have to tell directions in this city.

That's it.
