Thales was a great philosopher in ancient Greece. One night, when going for a walk, Thales suddenly discovered the stars in the sky displayed an interesting pattern.

泰勒斯是古希腊一位伟大的哲学家。 一天晚上，泰勒斯出门散步，突然发现天上的星星呈现出一幅有趣的图案。

So he was watching the stars with great interest as he moved on. Not paying attention to the ground, he suddenly fell into the pit（深坑） at a bend on the road.

于是，他边走边兴致勃勃地观星。他一个不小心没看路，跌进了拐弯处的一个坑里。

When he climbed up covered with mud, a young man jeered（嘲笑）, “You claim to know the things in the sky, but you do not know the things on the ground. Falling into this pit, you are covered with mud. Is it the glory your knowledge brings you?”

他爬上来的时候满身泥泞，一个年轻人打趣道：“您号称通晓天文，看样子却不懂地理啊。跌进坑里，摔得满身是泥，这就是您所谓的知识带来的荣耀吗？”

Thales glanced at the young man who took pleasure in other people's misfortune, and said calmly, “Of course, I stand too high, so I have the chance to fall into the pit. The people like you, ignorant and incompetent, can only lie in the pit and won't enjoy my freedom, of course.”

泰勒斯一看年轻人这么幸灾乐祸，冷静地说：“那当然，我站得高，自然有可能跌进坑里。像你这样的人，无知又低能，只能待在坑里。我享受的自由你岂能懂？”

Hearing this, the young man flushed with shame immediately.

听了这话，年轻人立刻羞红了脸。
