Onion:

Those who have eaten onions know that it has a strong pungent smell, which means that it belongs in the category of acrid flavor in the Chinese medicine. This flavor carries a dispersing energy, so raw onions are capable of dispelling substances of Yin nature in the body, just like how clouds in the sky are blown away by the wind. If the pathogenic Yin substance becomes abundant in the body, the Qi (energy) will not move smoothly and the blood circulation will also be hindered. So, eating onions frequently is good for the body.

洋葱:

吃过洋葱的都知道,其味很冲鼻子,属于中医的辛味,辛味能散。所以洋葱生吃可以散体内的阴性物质,就好比天空中阴云密布,被风吹开一样。当体内阴邪偏盛的时候,气运行不畅,血也会运行受阻,所以常吃洋葱可以起到很好的保健作用。

Onions are not only acrid, but also slightly sweet. According to the Canon of Internal Medicine, “acrid and sweet flavor generates dispersing Yang energy”, so onion is a food with Yang energy. In cooked onions, the pungent taste is greatly reduced, the sweet taste is enriched, and its properties change from dispersing to nourishing. 

洋葱不仅仅是辛味,还有淡淡的甜味,即甘味,按照内经所说,辛甘发散为阳,所以洋葱是属阳的;做熟后辛味大大减少,味甘滋腻,转为发散为滋补。

Onions are often used as a base in many cooked dishes, like in the popular dry hot pot, for its pungent dispersing power to remove the smell of meat and add a more aromatic flavor. For people with high blood lipids, high blood viscosity, or those who have Qi stagnation and blood stasis, it's good to eat raw onions frequently. There’s a classic salad dish matching black wood ears (auricularia auricula) with onions.

做菜时常常用洋葱垫底,大家常见的干锅,就是借用其辛散之力,可以散除肉食的腥味,还能增加香味。血脂高,血粘度高,气滞血瘀患者,可以凉拌洋葱经常吃吃,经典搭配:黑木耳拌洋葱。

Ren Zhi Tang Chinese medicine clinic has a frequently used herbal formula for toothache: Herba Ephedrae (10 grams), Rheubarb (10 grams), Mint (10 grams), and Glycyrrhiza (10 grams). The herbs should be immersed in boiling water and then drunk like a tea. It is effective for most people with toothache. The treatment principle of this formula is to dispel the pathogenic factors from the exterior of the body and clear the internal heat.

任之堂牙痛常用方:生麻黄10生大黄10薄荷10生甘草10,开水泡后当茶饮,对大多数牙痛患者都有效,其作用原理就是解表清里。

How can we recreate this formula with common kitchen's ingredients? Onions have this dispersing effect. By coupling it with ingredients that clear the internal heat, a similar effect to the herbal formula can be achieved, which is to dispel the exterior and clear the interior. I have encountered several patients with toothache in the past month. At times when Chinese herbs were not accessible, the patients were recommended with the following method: to drink squeezed juice from onions and white radish. The patients’ symptoms were alleviated after doing this a few times. This recipe has a good effect for treating toothache. 

厨房里如何配出这样的小方呢?洋葱能散,配上能清里热的食材,就可以起到解表清里的效果。最近一个月遇到几例牙痛患者,在没有中药材可用的时候,建议患者采用:洋葱加白萝卜,榨汁喝,喝了几次病情就得到缓解,效果不错。

For people with cough or asthma, onions can also be a remedy. Chop the onions, then use the nose to absorb the smell of the onions repeatedly. This method uses the dispersing energy of the onion to dispel the 'haze' in the lungs, and the person’s cough is relieved naturally afterwards.

对于咳嗽患者和哮喘患者,将洋葱切碎,用鼻子反复的吸洋葱味道,利用洋葱的辛散之气,散去肺里的阴霾,咳嗽自然就缓解了。

Cinnamon:

Cinnamon is used as a Chinese herb and has the following effects: invigorates Yuan Yang (元阳 the original vital function), warms the Spleen and Stomach, removes accumulated cold, and promotes blood circulation. It is used to treat deficiency of the fire of the Vital Gate, a faint pulse and cold limbs, yang depletion and collapse, abdominal pain and diarrhea, a cold abdominal colic and severe Qi counterflow, pain and coldness in the back and knees, empty Yang escaping, and the heat above coldness below pattern.

桂皮:

就是中药材肉桂,其功效为:补元阳,暖脾胃,除积冷,通血脉。治命门火衰,肢冷脉微,亡阳虚脱,腹痛泄泻,寒疝奔豚,腰膝冷痛,及虚阳浮越,上热下寒。

Below is a recipe using cinnamon in meat stock. It warms the Middle, strengthens the Stomach and warms the back and the knees. It produces good results for people with coldness in the abdomen, back or legs. Make a meat stock using 10 grams of cinnamon and 500 grams of meat (lamb meat or pork ribs). Eat the meat and drink the soup. 

将桂皮10克和1斤肉(羊肉、猪排骨)炖汤,炖熟之后,吃肉喝汤,可以起到温中健胃、暖腰膝、对腹冷腰凉腿寒,有较好的作用。

For people who do lots of physical activities, have had their back exposed to coldness or dampness, had injuries or have blood stasis, they may experience frequent lower back pain which is worse in damp rainy weather. To treat lower back pain, try this recipe: ground cinnamon into powder, use 1 gram each time, drink with yellow rice wine, three times a day, the discomfort could be gone in a few days' time.

体力劳动者,腰部受寒受湿,有劳伤有瘀血,常常出现腰痛,阴雨天加重。用桂皮研成细粉,每次1克,黄酒冲服,一天三次,几天就好了。

For people with the decline of the fire of the Vital Gate pattern, presenting symptoms of coldness in waist and back, lower limbs, cold pain in joints, try this recipe:

put 20 grams of cinnamon and some rock candy (crystal sugar) in 500 grams of spirit (high alcohol content (白酒), soak for a week, then consume spirit over the days. 

肉桂20克,冰糖适量,白酒一斤,浸泡一周后慢慢服用,可以解决命门火衰,腰冷下肢寒,关节冷痛......

Sesame seeds and Sesame oil

Sesame seeds and sesame oil nourish Yin and reinforce Kidney, its effect on  nourishing yin is comparable with Prepared Rehmannia Root.

芝麻,芝麻油

为补肾滋阴之品,其滋阴之功效,可代替熟地。

Children with a cold and have a fever, often take antipyretics repeatedly, because the temperature goes up and down and cannot return to the normal regulatory temperature. To treat this: Boil sesame seeds in water and drink the tea. This can have a very good antipyretic effect, because the drink nourishes yin, replenishes water, and promotes transformation of Qi in the body.

小儿感冒发热,反复服用退烧药,时好时坏,不能缓解,用芝麻煮水喝,补阴补水,促进体内气化,退烧效果非常好。

For someone with a dry cough due to Yin deficiency, drink a few tablespoons of sesame oil, and the symptom can be relieved straight away!

阴虚燥咳,喝几勺芝麻油,可立即缓解!

If someone has long-term constipation with sticky stool and a cracked tongue coating, it is due to lack of fluids in the intestine, and deficiency of Yin fluid in the body. To treat this: Take a cup of boiled water with a pinch of salt and a tablespoon of sesame oil, stir well and and drink it every night before going to bed. This recipe helps with both sleep and constipation.

患者长期便秘,大便粘滞,舌苔裂纹,此为肠道缺水,体内阴液亏虚,每晚睡觉前用白开水一杯,加少许盐,加一勺芝麻油,搅匀后当药喝,可以改善睡眠和便秘。

For someone with constipation and insomnia, accompanied with cold intolerance in the lower limbs, try this recipe: use 50 grams of sesame, 10 grams of cinnamon. Boil in water for 15 minutes, add a pinch of salt. Drink this tea and eat sesame, do this every day and it will have a good result.

对于便秘、失眠、伴有下肢畏寒,每天可以用芝麻一两,桂皮十克,加水煮十五分钟,加点盐,喝汤吃芝麻,疗效不错。

Lard

Lard can replenish Sanjiao, and also clear Sanjiao. It nourishes Yin and moisturizes dryness!

猪油

能补通三焦,也能通三焦,养阴,润燥!

In situations of invasion of Moyuan by pathogens, Sanjiao is not smooth; eating an appropriate amount of lard is good. Same applies to someone with eczema or body wasting.

邪伏膜原,三焦不畅;湿疹患者;消瘦患者;都可以适当吃点猪油!

Stir-fry cooking with lard is good for improving the immune system. Make sure to eat the dish while it is still hot, do not eat if the dish is cold.

用猪油炒菜,对提升抵抗力非常好,注意趁热吃,不要吃凉的。

Wang Shouyi Thirteen-Spices

Ingredients: round cardamom fruit, villous amomum fruit, nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, prickly ash peel, star anise, fennel, common aucklandia root, dahurian angelica root, KaempferiaGalanga (Sannai), lesser galangal rhizome, and zingiber dried ginger.

王守一十三香

成分:紫叩、砂仁、肉蔻、肉桂、丁香、花椒、大料、小茴香、木香、白芷、三奈、良姜、干姜。

These ingredients can all be used as herbs. They warm Yang to transform Qi, promote Qi and clear stagnation, elevate clear qi and descend turbid Qi. It is good to understand the function of these Thirteen-Spices from the Qi level. 

成分都是药材,温阳化气,行气散郁,升清降浊,从气的层面来理解这个配方,还是很好的。

For anyone with abdominal distension, stomach distension, white greasy tongue coating, poor appetite, use the Thirteen-Spices in cooking!

凡是腹胀,胃胀,舌苔白腻,胃口不开,做菜时加点十三香,还是很好的!
