曼殊英文名片 曼殊《潮音·自序》1(英文) Byron and Shelley are two of the greatest British poets . Both had the lofty sentiment of creation, love, as the theme of their poetic expressions. Yes, although both wrote principally on love, and their fortunes, their modes of expression differ as widely as the poles. Byron was born and brought up in luxury , and liberty . He was an ardent and sincere devotee of liberty—yes, he dared to claim liberty in every thing—great and small, social or where he was extreme. Byron’s poems are like a stimulating liquor --the more one drinks, the more one feels the sweet fascination. They are full of charm , full of beauty, full of sincerity throughout. In sentimentality, enthusiasm and straight-forwardness of diction, they have no equal. He was a free and noble hearted man. His end came while he was engaged in a noble pursuit. He went to Greece, where he sided with the patriots who were fighting for their liberty. His whole life, career and production are intertwined in Love and Liberty. Shelley, though a devotee of love, is judicious and pensive. His enthusiasm for love never appears in any strong out-burst of expression. He is a “Philosopher-lover”. He loves not only the beauty of love, or love for love, but“love in philosophy” or “philosophy in love”. He had depth, but not continuance: energy without youthful devotion. His poems are as the moon shine, placidly beautiful, somnolently still, reflected on the waters of silence and contemplation. Shelley sought Nirvana in love; but Byron sought action for love, and in love. Shelley was self-contained and quite engrossed in his devotion to the Muses. His premature and violent death will be lamented so long as English literature exists. Both Shelley and Byron’s works are worth studying by every lover of learning, for enjoyment of poetic beauty, and to appreciate the lofty ideals of Love and Liberty. In these pages, I have the honour to offer my readers translations of a few poems the works of Byron. Hereafter, I shall try my best, to present them with the translation of the world reknowned Sakunta la of the famous poet Kalidasa of Hindustan, the Land of Lord Sakya Buddha. That the labour bestowed on the present publication will be appreciated by my readers is the writer’s earnest desire. Manshu MCMIX. 1、《潮音》──曼殊编辑的英译汉诗集,出版于1911年东京。此序以英文写作。 柳无忌:《潮音·自序》中文译文 拜伦和雪莱是两位英国最伟大的诗人,同样创造性地把崇高的恋爱作为他们表达诗意的主题。是的,虽然他们大抵写着爱情、爱人,与爱人的幸运,但他们表达时的方式却有如南北两极遥远地离异着。 拜伦生长教养于繁华、富庶、自由的环境中。他是个热情真挚的自由信仰者──他敢于要求每件事物的身由──在的、小的,社会或政治的。他不知道如何,或在何处会趋于极端。拜伦的诗象一种有奋激性的酒,人喝了愈多,愈会甜蜜地陶醉。他的诗充满魅力,美丽和真实。在情感、热忱和坦率的措词方面,拜伦的诗是不可及的。他是一位心地坦白而高尚的人。当他正在追踪着伟大的前程时,他的末日就来临了。他赴希腊去,帮助那些为自由而奋斗的爱国志士。他整个的生活、事业和著作,都缠结在恋爱和自由之间。 虽然他是个恋爱的信仰者,雪莱审慎而有深思。他为爱情的热忱,从未表现在任何强烈激动的字句内。他是一位“哲学家的恋爱者”。他不但喜好恋爱的优美,或者为恋爱而恋爱,他也爱着“哲学里的恋爱”,或“恋爱里的哲学”。他有深奥处,但并不恒定,持续毅力中没有青年人那般的信仰。他的诗像月光一般,温柔地美丽,睡眠般恬静,映照在寂寞沉思的水面上。雪莱在恋爱中寻求涅槃1;拜伦为着恋爱,并在恋爱中找着动作。雪莱能克己自制,而又十分专注于他对缪斯们2的崇仰。人们为他英年惨死3的悲哀,将与英国文学同样的永久存在着。 雪莱和拜伦两人的著作,对于每个爱好学问的人,为着享受诗的美丽,欣赏恋爱和自由的崇高理想,都有一读的价值。 在这本书里,我有荣幸把从《拜伦诗集》中译出的几首奉呈于诸位读者。此后,我将竭我的能力,把世界闻名的《沙恭达罗》那篇我佛释迦圣地、印度诗哲迦梨陀娑所撰的诗剧──翻译出来,献给诸位。至于我赋予此书的劳力,如为读者所欣赏,那就是作者恳挚的愿望了。 曼殊 1、涅槃──佛教修养所要达到的最高境界。至此,一切烦恼“寂(熄)灭”,一切“清净功德”“圆满”(具备)。此为梵文Nirvana的音译。意译“灭度”、“入灭”、“圆寂”。后来也称僧人之死为“涅槃”、“入灭”。 2、缪斯们──希腊神话中掌管文艺、音乐、天文等的九位女神。此泛指诗神。 3、英年惨死──雪莱在意大利海边溺死,年仅30岁。 |
