Memorial Day is a holiday on which people honor the dead. This day of remembrance 回想,怀念 has been celebrated in the United States since the Civil War. At that time, it was known as Decoration Day. On Decoration Day, the graves ofCivil War soldiers were decorated with flowers.

In the beginning, ceremonies honoring the dead were held at cemeteries where large numbers of soldiers were buried. Different places held their ceremonies at different times. As more and more people began to observe a day of remembrance, it was decided that Decoration Day would officially be on May 30.


Over time, the name of the holiday became known as Memorial Day. It also became the day for honoring everyone who died in the service of the United States. That included the servicepeople who served in the Mexican-American War, World War II, and the Korean and Vietnamese Wars, as well as the Civil War.

Today, Memorial Day is a time to honor the memories of all deceased 死亡 persons, civilians 平民 as well as military. People place flowers, wreaths 花环, or flags on the graves of their loved ones. Cities hold parades 游行,阅兵 and other kinds of celebrations.

Memorial Day is no longer always on May 30. It is now on whatever date falls on the last Monday of May. The date was changed so that it always follows a weekend, giving people a three-day holiday each year. Although Memorial Day is mainly the time to honor the departed 死者, it is now also a time for rest and relaxation.
