The Statue of Liberty was a gift of friendship to the United States from the people of France. The statue was signed and built in France. It was completed in 1884. For one year, it stood in Paris, France.

It had been decided that the statue would be placed on Liberty Island 自由岛 . A New York Harbor 纽约港 when it came to the United States. It would rest on a 154-foot-high pedestal基座. The cornerstone奠基石 (first stone) for the pedestal was set in place on June 7, 1884. It was finished a year later. 

In Paris the statue was taken apart. Its 350 pieces was packed into 214 crates板条箱. The crates were loaded onto a ship. The ship arrived in New York in June 1885. French and American workers put the statue back together on top of the pedestal. President Grover Cleveland格罗弗·克利夫兰，美国第22任总统 stood by as the last bolt螺栓 was placed on October 28, 1886. 

The statue itself is 151 feet tall. On the pedestal, it rises 305 feet above the ground. The head of Lady Liberty is 17 feet high and 10 feet wide. Her nose is 4 feet, 6 inches. Her mouth is 3 feet wide. Her right arm is 42 feet long. At her waist腰部, she is 35 feet thick. Her total weight is 225 tons. 

It is possible for visitors to go inside the statue. They can go all the way to the head. There are 25 windows in the crown on her head.
