 内容提要：美国著名军舰the Monitor的特点、服役经历、沉没与打捞。 Before the 1860s, all ships were made of wood. During the Civil War, many wooden warships舰艇 were destroyed and sunk. In 1862, the Northern navy brought out its new warship, the Monitor. It look like a large raft筏子 with a big tin can sitting in the middle. The wooden deck was just 18 inches above the water. It was covered with two layers of iron plates金属板. The “tin can” was nine feet high and 20 feet across. It had thick iron walls. It could turn in a circle. Inside were two large, powerful guns. The engine room and the crew’s living space were underwater. The Monitor’s first battle was with a Southern ship called the Virginia. The sides of the Virginia had been covered with iron plates. The Monitor was much smaller than the Virginia. Because its guns could swing in all directions, it had an advantage优势 over the Virginia. In the end, neither ship was badly damaged. The Monitor changed forever the way future warships were built. On December 31, 1862, the Monitor sank during a storm at sea. In 1974, 112 years after it sunk, it was found 16 miles from shore. It was lying upside down in 230 feet of water. Since then, several search groups have gone to the ocean floor to examine the ship. Many things have been recovered重新获得 from it. They include a lantern提灯, dishes, a sealed jar of pickled腌制的 relish开胃食品, part of a leather book cover, and pieces of a cabinet. On August 29，1983, the anchor was brought up.
