【原】What shape还是what shapes？一个简单的类比就能解答这个问题 - 白话英语202034

自从2017年我创建了教师群和家长群以来，对于形状的提问究竟是用what shape还是用what shapes，就一直是我们各群一个久经不衰的讨论话题。2017年，问题是这样的：

请问一下，--What ________(shape)are the cookies？--They are stars. 填shapes还是shape？

我的回答是：

shape和color可有一比：我们问What color are the cookies? They are brown. 由此可推知，应该是shape。

2019年，曾有朋友又问过这样的问题，我去搜索了一下，有一个网页谈论过这个话题，是这样说的：

Which is correct?

1. What shape are they?

2. What shapes are they?

有人回复说：

These can both be correct, but in different situations. For example:

A: I fashioned a new form of roof tile that might fit in that irregular corner that standard tiles won't work in. I made ten of them so we can see how they fit in some section of that corner.

B: What shape are they? (The implication is that all ten of the tiles are of the same shape.)

C: I made some new blocks that the kids can use in the playroom. These are completely different from the ones they're using now.

D: What shapes are they? (The implication is that all the new blocks are of different shapes.)

大致意思是，还是要看情景。比如A说，我做了一种新形状的屋瓦，准备把那个标准瓦片堵不住的不规则角落给堵上。我做了十个，我们来看看贴合程度怎样。

B问，你做的这十个，都是个什么形状呀？（言下之意是，这十个屋瓦都是同一个形状）

换一个情景，C说，我做了一些新的模块，孩子们在游戏室玩的时候用得上。这些跟孩子们正在玩的那些完全不同。

D问，你做的这些，都是些什么形状呀？（言下之意是，这些新的模块，形状都不一样。）

这是直接探讨在问答来回中是应该用what shape还是what shapes。我们要面临的问题，并不是这样的情况，而是对划线部分提问，所以我觉得这个探讨，对我们的价值不是很大。当然，我也把相关网页链接放在本文左下角“阅读原文”按钮上，供朋友们参考。

今年，问题又来了：

请教大家：什么时候用what shape提问，什么时候用what shapes 提问？比如They are circles. 中对circles提问，shape和shapes，用哪个？

我的答复是：

这个问题不少朋友问过，我也去搜索过有没有讨论，没有找到（这其实是我忘记了找到过）。我认为，如果把circles划上了，那么就不知道是什么形状了，那自然也不知道是几种形状，所以应该用单数：What shape are they?

这个问题，使我想起另一个问题：What colour are they? 我们从未见过what colours are they? 这样的问法。

我觉得可以认为shape和colour是同类的性质。

又有朋友问：

如果是They are circles and triangles. 那么应该用哪个呢？是what shape还是what shapes？

我答复说：

我没有找到相关讨论。按照我的理解，既然把circles and triangles都划上了，那么提问的人就不知道究竟是几种形状；在不知道的情况下，那仍然是要用单数what shape来提问。事实上，对于Those cows are black and white. 这样的句子（有两种颜色）来说，提问的句子仍然是What colour are those cows? 而不会说成What colours are those cows?

总而言之，只要是把表示形状的部分划线划上了，那就应该是what shape，而不是what shapes。

不过，我们也要分清情况，并不是永远不能用what shapes，比如这种：

请问老师和群友们:  下面这个句子有问题吗?   What shapes are there? There is a heart,  a square and a circle. 

那么这句话：what shapes are there? 这里的what shapes就没什么问题。
