 Fig 3,4,5  Sagittal T2-weighted short flip angle and spin echo T1-weighted MR shows the vertebral body fracture nicely and shows the retrolisthesis better than the plain film (Fig 3 and Fig 5). Observe on the sagittal images that the posterior longitudinal ligament is of increased signal, discontinuous at C4-5, and stripped off the posterior aspect of C6. The anterior longitudinal ligament is disrupted at C4-5 and C5-6. A thin layer of material between the vertebral bodies and thecal sac running from C2 down to C7 is consistent with blood in the epidural space. Both the sagittal and the axial GRE sequences (Fig 4) demonstrate impingement by the vertebral body fragments on the thecal sac and cord. Abnormal signal within the cord, which is low signal intensity on all sequences, is seen.
