cut和Corner这两个单词单看是不是都认识？

那么合在一起是什么意思呢？难道是“切角”？

Cut作动词有：割破；（用刀等）切下，割成；剪短...意思；作名词有n. 切，割；伤口；开口；削减；理发...；作形容词表示缩减的；割下的；雕过的。

Corners作名词有：角落；窘境（corner的复数形式）；作动词有使…陷入绝境；垄断（corner的第三人称单数形式）的含义。

其实，“cut corners”是“偷工减料”的意思，也可以说“走捷径”。

cut组成的非“切割”的词组有很多：

1.cut the mustard （美国俚语）获得成功，作出成绩，符合要求，符合条件

Cut我们熟悉，mustard是芥末的意思，合在一起Cut the mustard却不是“切芥末”的意思。

e.g.Different toppings can help vary the flavor – try mayonnaise, honey mustard, even peanut butter if you want a real taste of the West.

不同的调料可以改变不同的口味——如果想要真正的西方风味，可以试试蛋黄酱、蜂蜜芥末酱、甚至是花生酱。

符合要求：

e.g.The young man was not able to cut the mustard and he had to leave the army after only one year.

cut the mustard很多时候还会表示“成功，获得成就”，可以理解为“符合要求就能获得成功”。

9.cut to the chase 用作动词的意思：（美国俚语）抓住重点或中心问题，集中焦点；开门见山；提到关键问题；转入（或切入）正题

用法一：用作动词

1.（美国俚语）冲淡，稀释

e.g.You can cut the salt-ness with a little sugar.
