Throughout the 1980's and into the 1990's victims of AIDs were treated with fear to outright contempt. The failure to understand how the disease spread led to social and even medical ostracization with many funeral homes even refusing to serve those who died. The NAMES Project not only sought to memorialize the dead but also return a sense of dignity to them.
