FDR’s third term was not illegal, just unusual, but it was argued that these were unusual times: war had broken out in Asia in 1937-38 and then Europe first in Spain in 1936, and while that Civil War was concluded, the German Blitz had taken over half of Europe and Britain was fighting alone. While isolationism was popular in the US, Roosevelt’s platform of maintaining a consistent leadership as well as his continued New Deal efforts won him his third and unprecedented third term.
