H.H. Holmes Arrested

When: 1894
Where: Boston, Massachusetts

Who:
Dr Henry Howard Holmes

What:
Holmes is often referred to as the first of the modern serial killers.  When arrested and convicted he ultimately confessed to killing 27 people, though some of those he confessed to murdering were in fact still alive.  Other sources suggest he murdered as many as 200 people, many at his “Murder Castle” in Chicago, a never opened hotel meant to provide service to visitors to the World’s Fair.  Holmes never the less was guilty of murdering at least 9 people and disposing of their bodies in horrific manners, usually through dismemberment and burying in basements or stashed in chimneys of homes he rented while travelling.  Most of his murders were personal in nature while he married multiple wives – who were unaware of each other – or in schemes to commit fraud by collecting on life insurance policies of his partners turned victims.

Holme’s confessions are fraught with fallacies making his real exploits out of what has been independently proven through forensic investigations but also making him a subject of much conjecture that has made him of interest to both scientific and fictitious natures.  He was executed two years later by hanging and, by his own request, buried under concrete to prevent grave robbing.  His body was exhumed in 2017 to stop rumors that he had actually escaped execution, the body was proven his and reburied.
