诗人简介：

卡尔·桑德堡Carl Sandburg（1878.1.6—1967.7.22）是美国现代诗人兼传记作家，也是“芝加哥文艺复兴”运动（1912-1925）中闻名的诗人之一。桑德堡出生于贫寒的瑞典移民之家，虽未受过正规教育，但其丰富的生活阅历为其提供了创作的经验与素材；其创作的目的是“为朴素的人民写朴素的诗”，用诗来表达普通人的思想、情感和生活；其诗作获美国图书奖（1919、1920）、普利策奖（1950），并成为美国20世纪二三十年代最受读者喜爱的诗人之一。其著名诗集包括《芝加哥诗集》（Chicago Poems）、《剥玉米机》（Cornhuskers）、《烟和钢》(Smoke and Steel)等，著名诗作包括《芝加哥》(Chicago)、《港口》(The harbor)、《人民，是的》（The People, Yes）等。桑德堡早期诗作有明显的意象派诗歌痕迹，风格轻灵飘逸，从以下三首诗便可看出诗人对意象的巧妙运用，以及对惠特曼和狄金森诗的传承与创新。

Fog

 

The fog comes

on little cat feet

It sits looking

over harbor and city

on silent haunches

and then moves on

DESOLATE and lone

All night long on the lake

Where fog trails and mist creeps,

The whistle of a boat

Calls and cries unendingly,

Like some lost child
