 Amber

New Yorkers can stop grousing.

The duck is back.

Quit quacking and explain.

An exotic creature with an orange face and spectacular plumage has been spotted in Central Park.

I assume you’re not referring to the obvious person.

No.

A mandarin duck has been a recent sensation in the park.

The species is rarely seen in North America and crowds have flocked to the pond to get a view.

Then it disappeared, causing dismay.

Now it has been seen again and everyone is very happy.

He has been called the “hot duck” and “New York’s most eligible bachelor”.

Where did he come from?

He certainly hasn’t escaped from the park’s zoo, but he may have been privately owned.

He has a band on one leg and arrived early last month.

New Yorkers had better not get too attached to him because the parks department warned that he was likely to migrate to warmer climes at some point.

I’ve seen mandarin ducks in Richmond Park.

But I suppose if you live in the concrete jungle, it is exciting to see any wildlife at all.

New York isn’t short of wildlife!

There are red-tailed hawks around Central Park, including Pale Male, who nested on a Fifth Avenue balcony with Woody Allen as a neighbour.

“Hot duck” should probably keep an eye out for him.

Then there was “pizza rat”.

Aren’t all rats in New York pizza rats?

This one earned the nickname after a clip of him determinedly dragging a slice of pizza down some steps went viral.

Do rats count as wildlife?

OK, there are also coyotes.

Creatures from the prairies now prowling the five boroughs.

The first one was spotted in Central Park in 1999.

I bet they like mandarin duck.

If I were “hot duck”, I’d head south.

Perhaps to the Serengeti during the great migration.

Should be quieter.
