(This graph shows how the new oceanic crust is created at a constructive boundary)

2.1 Earthquakes and Volcanoes

The mantle is the widest section of the Earth. It has a thickness of approximately 2,900 km. The mantle is made up of semi-molten rock called magma. In the upper parts of the mantle the rock is hard, but lower down the rock is soft and beginning to melt.

The crust is the outer layer of the earth. It is a thin layer between 0-60 km thick. The crust is the solid rock layer upon which we live.

(The Earth's crust is broken up into pieces called plates.)

(Heat rising and falling inside the mantle creates convection currents generated by radioactive decay in the core. The convection currents move the plates. Where convection currents diverge near the Earth's crust, plates move apart. Where convection currents converge, plates move towards each other. The movement of the plates, and the activity inside the Earth, is called plate tectonics.)

Explain why volcanoes erupt at the destructive plate boundaries.

ocean crust/plate move towards the continental crust/plate and sink beneath it. This subduction destroys the older crust  which makes the continental crust has weakness or cracks for magma to rise.

The subduction also release the previous pressure balance here, then pressure imbalance cause earthquakes.

The continental crust is folded into fold mountains.

2.3 Coast

(a dune is a hill of loose sand built by wind or the flow of water)

Dunes form where the beach is wide enough to allow for the accumulation of wind-blown sand, and where prevailing onshore winds tend to blow sand inland.

As a dune forms, plant succession occurs.

2.5 Climate and Natural Vegetation

These incredible places cover only 6% of the Earth's surface but yet they contain MORE THAN 1/2 of the world's plant and animal species!

Rainforests have an abundance of plants and animals for the following reasons:

  • Climate: because rainforests are located in tropical regions, they receive a lot of sunlight. The sunlight is converted to energy by plants through the process of photosynthesis. Since there is a lot of sunlight, there is a lot of energy in the rainforest. This energy is stored in plant vegetation, which is eaten by animals. The abundance of energy supports an abundance of plant and animal species.

  • Canopy: the canopy structure of the rainforest provides an abundance of places for plants to grow and animals to live. The canopy offers sources of food, shelter, and hiding places, providing for interaction between different species. For example, there are plants in the canopy called bromeliads that store water in their leaves. Frogs and other animals use these pockets of water for hunting and laying their eggs.

Amazon Rainforest[area] in South America [Continent]

The high rainfall (annual between 2500-4500mm) and average high temperature around 25-30C in the tropical rainforest areas is influenced by the equatorial climate from at least three aspects- hot conditions throughout the year which means a lack of seasons, high levels of rainfall mainly caused by convection.

The tropical rainforests are generally near the equator. The overhead sun is high in the sky, which means they receive high-intensity insolation. Because of this location, the equatorial climates have high temperatures all year around. The warm and wet air rises high enough, cool, condense and form clouds and rain. This daily convection leads to high level of rainfalls.
