Chinese people are familiar with the festive song Gong Xi, Gong Xi, or Congratulations, Congratulations, as the warm and spirited melody echoes in the streets and alleys across the country during the Lunar New Year. But few people are aware of the song's wartime origin.

It was composed after the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) to celebrate and honor the freedom China achieved after its victory over Japan.

Famed and accomplished Chen Gexin who introduced Rose, Rose I Love YouShanghai Nights and The Blossom of Youth to the world, penned Gong Xi, Gong Xi and composed the music in Shanghai after Japan announced its surrender in 1945, with much patriotism and fervor. During the war and Japanese Occupation, Chen had been jailed and tortured for writing anti-Japanese songs.

The icy snow has melted,

See the plum tree blossom!

The long night is past,

I heard the rooster crow.

Congratulations, congratulations, congratulations to you.

After experiencing so many difficulties,

Going through so many ordeals,

How many hearts are looking forward

To the news of Spring!

Congratulations, congratulations, congratulations to you.

This particular melody was written in a minor key which, according to many musicians, gives the tune a melancholic edge, a tinge of desolation.

The song was originally recorded by famous Shanghai diva Yao Li and her brother Yao Min. This version doesn't carry the joy and merriment like later versions do but rather a quiet celebration of freedom and congratulations to people who survived the ordeal.

Because its Chinese title is also a common Lunar New Year greeting and the song celebrates the arrival of spring, it quickly became associated almost exclusively with New Year celebrations and remains a part of the season's musical canon.
