说是记生词，其实是首先训练阅读能力和思考能力：“忐忑”记词。

1. alter v.

[疑惑]孤立看词：alter什么意思啊？

[语境]My mom had to alter my coat because it was too large for me = My mom had to make an alteration to my coat because it was too 

large for me.

[思考] 因为大衣太宽了，妈妈不得不对大衣做的这个alter my coat是什么？

     注意：alter是动词，也可以写成它的名词结构＝make an alteration to/in

[答案]通过已知语境 because it was too large for me（衣服太宽大）及

    My mom had to do（妈妈不得不做些什么）表达中的相关性，可

    以“识别”alter大概有“改动、剪裁”，甚至“扔掉、卖掉“等动作的

    大概含义。

[译文]因为大衣太宽了，妈妈不得不对拿来修改一下。

[语境]Believe me, a little alteration will improve the dress you are

    wearing.

[思考]相信我，你穿的衣服只要一点点的什么就会大为改观？

[答案]衣服要想好看，必须小小地alteration一下，由些语境我们可以识别

    alteration大概的意思有“改变、修改”的意思。

[译文]相信我，你穿的衣服只要做小小的一点修改就会好看多了。

    alter/alteration在此义项下的参考语境还有：

[语境]My mom did a good job on the dress alteration

[语境]The dying old man altered his will after his son refused to 

    take care of him =The dying old man made alterations in his 

    will after his son refused to take care of him.

[思考]濒死的老人因为儿子拒绝照顾自己之后而对遗嘱做的这个alter his will是

    什么？

[答案]濒死的老人alter他的遗嘱和his son refused to take care of 

    him（儿子不照顾他）是有语境关联性的。由此关联性可以大致识别

    alter的意思有“更改、变更、修改”等意思，不可以是“烧掉、卖

    掉、放弃”之类无关联性的含义。

[译文]濒死的老人因为儿子拒绝照顾自己，不得不对遗嘱做了修改。

[语境]The passenger plane had to alter its course because of a 

    heavy storm ahead.

[思考] 因为前面有暴风雪，航班不得不对自己的航线做的这个alter its course

     是什么？

[答案] 根据alter its course与航班在前有暴风雪要对航线不得不做出一定反应

     的语境关联性，可以识别alter its course有“改变航线”的意思。

[译文] 因为前面有暴风雪，航班不得不对自己的航线做了变更。

[语境]The boss is not very happy because there has been an 

    alteration in our plans.

[思考] 老板因为我们对计划做了什么所以不高兴？

[答案] 根据The boss is not very happy（老板不高兴）与an alteration 

     in our plans的语境关联性，可以识别alteration是“推迟、修

     改、出了问题”之类含义的词汇。不可能是“因为计划执行得很

     好”之类语境不通的表达。

[词义] change; modification; adjustment

     改变,改动,变更

[成就感]我们通过阅读识别的意思与其词义是否相当接近？

1) alter my coat =make an alteration to my coat改大衣.

2) a little alteration will improve the dress 稍稍改动一个就会让你的

  衣服大变样
