这两天有一条视频火了，记者在伦敦街头采访老人，给年轻时的自己提个建议，他们几乎无一例外都在说：要勇敢去尝试，不要考虑太多，要对自己更自信些。这让我想到，我在耶鲁读书时也收到过一份珍贵的礼物——耶鲁毕业30年校友给学生们的寄语。 我常常以这样的角度思考自己的一生：当我老了以后，我希望年轻的自己是怎样的，希望自己的一生如何过。 工作几年后，如今再把这份寄语拿出来看，又有了些新的收获。 这么好的东西不应该只有我自己留着，也分享给你们。原本都是英文的，有一些重点的话我翻译成了中文。 Pay attention to the classes you enjoy. Explore career paths in these areas. Not everyone has to go into consulting or investment banking! There are many fulfilling career paths. Over time, you will find a fulfilling career path through trial and error. Don't worry about the future. Get through it and you'll be prepared for whatever is thrown at you post-SOM. The work you get in the real world will just seem normal or easy and you will shine when compared with your peers. You are truly fortunate to be at Yale, utilize the vast resources, and take advantage of experiences outside your level of comfort, but in line with your true interests. Make as many friends as possible, your classmates are some of the most interesting people you will ever know, and they are also going to be some of the most successful people you will know. Help each other now, and you'll be more likely to help each other later. Pay most attention to yourself – what do you find fun, what are your strengths, what makes you happy – and less attention to industries, firms, etc. You spend so much more time making yourself happy than making a particular firm happy. You have to make things work for you. Family changes everything. Consider all that you want in life – flexibility, autonomy, etc. Not just what your work is. So, in summary, expect a lot, but know you will have to work hard to get it. GOOD LUCK! Look outside the CDO for career advice; don't get caught up in the recruiting process if those aren't the jobs you're interested in. Relax - things will work out. Internships matter only to some extent. Find at least something that you love to do in your next job. Not everything, just one or two will keep you from being unhappy. Don’t listen to anyone but yourself. It's easier to take risks earlier in your career than later in your career. Even if you are doing very well in your first job after SOM and recognized for your performance, be sure to carve out time and space to step back and reflect on whether the work is really what you want to be doing. It's easier to defer these questions, given how busy you will be. The hardest part of finding fulfilling work is deciding what is fulfilling work for you, not actually finding the position. There is a way to figure out what fulfills you – informational interviewing.找满意工作最难的部分不是找到那份工作，而是找到什么是让你满意的。寻找的方式是去“采访”做这个工作的人。Have your work speak to your heart and feel right in your gut. (Class of 1981)Enjoy your peers at SOM – they are amazing people and it’s hard to find such a great group again.Pursue what you love and spend your time with (and take care of) those people you love- it’s more important than money or getting somewhere fast.Do something you find intellectually interesting with people you like.Do the self examination to choose tasks that engage rather than prestige, degree of competition, compensation, etc. It’s a long life/career. (Class of 1986)Take the classes that interest you, not what you think is impressive or expected for an MBA. Take advantage of being at Yale, beyond SOM. Take other classes, use the campus.Get to know your professors.Trust your sense of who you are – don’t get blindsided by the mold that an MBA program can try to fit you into (even though SOM has a lot of flexibility).Do not be afraid to explore options. Know you may never “retire.” (Class of 1986)I would strongly encourage students to actively seek out alums and non-alums who are doing what they think they would like to do and to speak to them about their experiences in that job, career, or calling. If uncertain on what they want to do in the future, I would again recommend speaking to willing, happy alums about their jobs, careers and callings.The organization you join is not static either (compared to you as an individual). If you joined with a calling and things change at the organization, making that unlikely, don’t defer moving on.It’s not a path, it’s a meander. It’s crooked. NO one has a 25 year job any more. (Class of 1986)Consistency on what you want to achieve and how you wish to accomplish this goal. (Class of 2006)Have a long term plan or goal in mind as you think about pursuing your first position. Then review it regularly. PS. It’s absolutely fine if it changes. (Class of 1986)Nothing you’ve learned prepares you for how you feel the first time:You lose a loved one/there is a crisis or disasterYou leave your child with a caregiverThese and other events cause you to reevaluate the balance of work and life.
