Passage 1

The Celebration of Western Festivals

Nowadays, an increasing number of Chinese people are fond of celebrating some Western festivals. For example, they send chocolate and flowers to their beloved on Valentine’s Day. In addition, they make fool of others as what westerners do on April Fool’s Day. There are many factors deciding this phenomenon(现象).

Among all these factors, language learning plays a critical role. More youths are exposed to western culture and festivals through learning English. Moreover, some Western festivals offer people an opportunity to enjoy the relaxing and comfortable atmosphere, which attracts a large number of Chinese people. Besides, many businessmen view foreign festivals as golden opportunities to make money, so they may try desperately to boost the atmosphere of foreign festivals.

In my opinion, Chinese people celebrating Western festivals has both advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, by celebrating Western festivals, people have more opportunities to show their affection to others and to get together. However, on the other hand, our own home-grown festivals’ crucial roles may be weakened to some extent. Therefore, we must keep a balance between the Western festivals and our traditional festivals.

Passage 2

Celebrity Effect (明星效应)

Nowadays, more and more companies use celebrity effect to promote their products. Everyday we are exposed to a large number of star advertisements on television, newspapers and other media. In addition, it has become a common phenomenon that entertainment celebrities and sports stars are employed as spokesmen for a certain brand. There are many different factors contributing to celebrity effect.(描述现象段)

Among all these factors, the great profits celebrity effect plays a critical role. The familiar images of celebrities may popularize the products they speak for in a short time. Moreover, celebrity endorsement(赞成,支持) may enhance the products’ images, and thus win the consumers’ trust. Besides, to be a spokesman also helps the celebrity not only make a lot of money but increase his exposure and popularity.(说明原因段)

No doubt, celebrities increase the charm of the products, and a win-win result is achieved between companies and celebrities. However, it is worth noting that some celebrities are not responsible enough for their speaking for products. They become the marketing tool of some dishonest companies. Therefore, I suggest celebrities improve their sense of responsibility and make efforts to achieve an all-win of consumers, celebrities and companies.(阐述观点段)

Passage 3

College Graduates’ Self-employment

Nowadays, a great number of graduates choose to be self-employed, which had aroused great concern. Many college graduates start their own business instead of applying for jobs as employees. In addition, the number of self-employed graduates keeps increasing. There are many different factors contributing to this phenomenon.( 描述现象段)

Among all these factors, the desire to realize self-value plays a critical role. College graduates today are usually strong-minded and they would rather be their own bosses than put up with the bondage(束缚) of regulations as employees. Moreover, some college graduates believe that doing their own business can bring them more economic benefits than working for others. Besides, lots of college graduates have to be self-employed since suitable jobs are hard to find at present.(说明因素段)

In my opinion, it’s feasible for college graduates to be self-employed. For one thing, it releases the heavy burden on the job market. For another, it can help college graduates be more decisive. Therefore, college graduates should be encouraged to start their own business.(阐述观点段)

Passage 5

How to Succeed in a Job Interview

It is generally accepted that a job interview is very important in the process of job hunting. It is obvious that a job interview is a good chance to display one’s talented performance. Additionally, if a job seeker can leave a good impression on the interviewer, he may be more likely to get the job. Therefore, how to succeed in a job interview is worth paying more attention to.

Many a factor plays an important role in a successful interview. Above all, the interviewee should dress neatly and properly since a good first impression is always a good start. Moreover, the interviewee must properly demonstrate is attitude and skills for the job and his knowledge about job-related areas. In addition, a really impressive job seeker must convey a sense of self-confidence.

From my point of view, the importance of the job interview can’t be over underemphasized. Job hunters should have a right attitude towards it. Also, they should get some advice and guidelines so as to succeed in the job interview. In conclusion, it is necessary for the job seekers to have a good preparation for the interview.

Passage 6

Talent-search Show on Campus(校园选秀)

In recent years, there has been a craze in talent shows all over the country. This craze also spreads quickly to campuses. Various talent-search show, like”Campus Superstar Competition” and “Happy Boy”, have emerged on after another on campus. Moreover, these activities are almost the copies of those social talent shows no matter in the form or in the contents.

As everyone sees, talent shows are bringing great influence on college students. Above all, these activities enrich students’ after-class life and provide a good stage for them to show themselves. Also, by attending these activities, college students are encouraged to become more confident in themselves. However, talent shows can bring some negative effects at the same time. For instance, many activities call for so much time and energy that participants’ study may be disturbed.

From my point of view, the overall quality of these activities should be improved. For one thing, schools and education departments should give more instruction and attention to campus talent shows. For another, the activity organizers should initiate an activity in a more fresh and unique way. In a word, with the improvement in quality, talent shows will play a more positive role in college life.

Passage 7

Student Use of Computers

As is shown in the chart, the number of average hours a student spends on computers has grown up tremendously. From 1990 to 1995, the average hours that students spend on computers every week only doubled. However, in 2000, college students averagely spent 20 hours per week on computers, which is five times as many as that of 1995. It is obvious that college students become more and more crazy about computers.

There are many reasons explaining this growth. The main reason is that computers can be widely used in study since PC prices decrease greatly. What is more, charges for using the Internet have dropped. As a result, more college students can afford a private computer and to use computers every day.

Considering all these, I believe that there are still disadvantages and problems in student use of computers. First of all, the computer is often used only as a typewriter on campus. Furthermore, some students use computers mainly to play games. Therefore, we should try to help students make better use of computers.

Passage 8.

Poverty-stricken(贫困) Students in College

In recent years, the group of poverty-stricken students has aroused wide-spread concern. They constantly suffer from financial hardships and encounter many difficulties in finishing their college education. What’s more, some students suffer not only physical difficulties but also mental stress brought by poverty.(描述问题段)

It is very clear that heavy financial burden is bringing great harm to these students. Above all, they always worry about their tuition and living expenditure(消费,支出). To make money, they sacrifice a lot of time taking part-time jobs, which inevitably influences their studies. Furthermore, too much stress from life makes some of them suffer mental imbalance. (说明危害段)

Considering the seriousness of the problem, we should pay more attention to these poverty-stricken students. Firstly, we should care about them rather than only sympathize(同情) them. Secondly, we should give them more financial aid. Thirdly, banks should provide them with interest-free loans. Only in this way can these students finish their study smoothly and be thankful to the society.( 说明方法段 )

Passage 9

Smoking

Nowadays, there are still quite a few people who are smoking everyday. As is known to all, smoking can lead to heart disease, cancer and other health problems. Even worse, smoking not only does harm to smokers but also damages the health of people around them.

However, even with the knowledge of the harmfulness of smoking, many people still find it difficult to quit smoking, which is due to the following reasons. Among these, nicotine(尼古丁), the main content of cigarettes plays a vital role. Its chemical effects make many people feel uncomfortable once they stop smoking for just a while. In addition, many smokers lack enough determination and willpower so that they often give up half way.

Considering the great harm brought by smoking, I think it is high time we took effective measures to help people keep away from it. Above all, smoking should be organized to raise people’s awareness of the harm of smoking. Besides, the government of cigarette manufacturers under control. Only through these ways can people be kept away from the harm of smoking as far as possible.

Passage 10

How to Reduce Cheating in Exams

Nowadays, there are quite a few students who cheat in exams. Doubtlessly, cheating in exams leads to unfairness. Additionally, it will mislead the teachers to have a wrong judgment of teaching achievements. Therefore, how to reduce cheating in exams is worth paying more attention to.

The following ways can be adopted to prevent students from cheating in exams. Above all, teachers should explain to students the harmfulness brought by cheating. Moreover, effective measures should be taken against cheating, for instance, punishment or penalties. In addition, both parents and teachers should give less pressure on students.

From my point of view, students who cheat to get high scores are mainly for fear of falling short of their parents’ expectation. However, one may cheat for one time, but by no means for the whole lifetime. Also, high scores won by cheating is rather dishonorable. Therefore, it is an urgent thing to put an end to cheating in exams.

Passage 11

Should the University Campus Be Open to Tourists?

When it comes to whether the university campus should be open to tourists, there is no complete agreement among people. Some people take it for granted that university campus should embrace tourists across the country. However, others maintain that the university campus should be closed to the tourists.

Those who hold the first opinion believe that refusing tourists is contradicting to universities’ proclaimed spirit of openness. In addition, they insist that no university has the right to reject taxpayers to enter its grounds because it is public land. However, still others think differently. In their opinion, too many tourists will add a burden to the security department of the university. Besides, they argue that these tourists will destroy the quiet environment and influence students’ normal study.

Weighing up these two arguments, I prefer the former opinion. For one thing, by visiting the university, high school students can experience the campus atmosphere and be stimulated to make a better preparation for the college entrance exam. For another, a university is a public place and should impart (传授) the spirit of openness. Considering these, I may reasonably conclude that the university campus should welcome all tourists.

Passage 12

Do “Lucky numbers” Really Bring Good Luck?

Quite a lot of people believe 'lucky numbers’like “8” can bring them good luck. Even some people spare no expense(effort) to get their telephone numbers or car numbers to include “8” .However, I hold the entirely different view.

Of course, “lucky numbers” may sound propitious and make people feel good. For example, those who believe “lucky numbers” may feel hopeful and confident when they think of their “lucky numbers”. But it doesn’t mean that lucky numbers really bring good luck. In my opinion, those numbers are only number, which have nothing to do with one’s lucky.

The following reasons can account for my argument. First, no number can change the reality and make a miracle. A good example to illustrate this is a seriously injured man should be treated as soon as possible but not wait till his “luck” date. Second, no scientific evidence can prove that there is a certain connection between luck and numbers. To conclude, we should work hard to obtain a happy life rather than depend on lucky numbers.

Passage13

Should Class Roll-call(点名) Be Required?

When it comes to whether class roll-call should be required, there is no complete agreement among people. Some people believe that class roll-call is of great necessity. However, others argue that it is an ineffective measure.(提出观点段)

Those who hold the first opinion believe that class roll-call helps ensure a good class attendance. In addition, class roll-call can remind the students to focus on the class. However, others think differently. In their opinion, class roll-call actually reflects the inability of the teacher and the poor quality of the class. Besides, they argue that class roll-call has nothing to do with the class content and is a waste of time.(对比论证段)

Weighting up these two arguments, I am inclined to the former one. For one thing, class roll-call keeps most students from skipping classes and hanging about. For another, it is a reflection of the school discipline. Considering these, I may reasonably conclude that class roll-call is very necessary.( 总结观点段)

Passage 14

Where There Is a Will, There Is a Way

The proverb”Where there is a will, there is a way” has been generally accepted. It tells us that a person with strong willpower will certainly accomplish a task no matter how difficult it is. The truth of it is deep and profound.

There are numerous examples supporting this argument. A case in point is that Karl Marx, who spent five years on his greatest work Das Kapital, won the respect of people all over the world. This is close to suggest that a strong will is a vital factor to one’s final success. For another example, Cao Xueqin confronted with great hardship in his pursuit for literature, but he finally completed his masterpiece Dream of Red Chamber. If he had given up on the half way, we would have no opportunity to appreciate such an excellence. Moreover, college students who persist in studying and eventually make it are also good examples.

Judging from the evidence offered, we might safely draw a conclusion that if we wish to succeed, we must firstly have a resolution to carry on. But what is worth noting is that a strong will should be accompanied by a right direction leading to the success. To conclude, whatever you do, please remember “Where there is a will, there is a way”.

Passage 15

Traveling Abroad

From the chart, it is clear that there has been a sharp rise in the number of people traveling abroad in X city in the decade from 1995 to 2005. As early as in 1995, the number was only about 10,000. then only 5 years later, in nearly increased to 40,000. And by 2005, the number had reached over 120,000, more than ten times as many as that of 1995.

There are many reasons accounting for this change. Firstly, it is due to the increase of people’s incomes in X city. People are better off and can afford a trip abroad. Secondly, china’s opening policy has created more chances for its people to travel abroad. Finally, the increase also has a lot to do with the development of the travel industry.

As far as I am concerned, the increasing number of people traveling abroad might have both advantages and disadvantages. For one thing, it will promote the exchanges between X city and other parts of the world. For another, some low-quality tourists might damage our country’s image. In brief, it is necessary for us Chinese tourists to pay more attention to our behaviors when we travel abroad.
