词语杂谈：kick off  与 kick start

这两个词语与踢（kick）有关， 都有“开始”、“启动”的意思，但用法有所不同。

kick off 是的动词短语，kick 是动词。kick start 是复合动词，kick是名词，表示方式，

start是动词。kick start 分开写是不规范的，正规的应该上是 kick-start 或 kickstart。

  

kick off   是英语俚语, 原意是足球比赛的“开球”，现代英语中指“开始”某项活动，

用法可用作不及物或动或及物。相当于 begin 或 conmence 的用法。

例句：

The first sporting action will be at Hampden Park where the football tournament

will kick off.

第一场体育比赛将在汉普顿公园举行，足球锦标赛将在那里开赛。

The referee tossed a coin to decide which team should kick off.

裁判掷硬币以决定哪个队开球。

The beer festival kicks off at 7pm on July 29 and tickets are £6.

啤酒节日7月29日下午7点开始, 门票6英镑。

They say that the campaign will officially kick off next Tuesday.

他们说这个运动将在下星期二正式启动。

The city kicked off  the centennial celebration with a parade. 

这座城市举行游行拉开了百周年庆典的帷幕。

Let's kick off our meeting with our monthly sales report.

kickstart（可以写成 kick-start, kick start 是非规范拼写）是复合动词，其基本意思是： 

用脚踏启动摩托车（to make the engine of a motorcycle start by forcefully pushing 

down a metal bar with your foot） 例如：He lifted the bike off its stand and kick-

started it. (他将摩托车撑脚架往上一提，开始蹬车启动。)

kick start 常用于表示“快速重新启动”、“使……重新开始 ” (To kick start aprocess 

that has stopped working or progressing is to take a course of action that will 

quickly start it going again.)   可用动词和名词。

例句：

They're trying to kickstart their tourism back into gear after the tsunami.

海啸过后，他们正努力使旅游业恢复正常。

The President has chosen to kick-start the economy by slashing interest rates.

总统选择通过大幅降低利率来重新拉动经济增长。

To help kick start the rebuilding process, the Bank allocated an initial $40 million 

for permanent housing support cash grants.

kick start 与 kick off  用法上的区别，kick start 强调 “重新启动”， 而 kick off 指某

事或某活动“刚开始”。
