How to make your explanations on grammar points interesting

Interest breeds interest. Interesting materials for and ways of teaching are two magic weapons for making classes interesting.

However, the former has been chosen by textbooks editors, so teachers havent got much space to give free rein to. And therefore, teachers try to cultivate in the field of the latter: interesting ways of teaching.

The article will focus on how to make your explanations on grammar points interesting by giving examples of my classroom for further discussion. Hope you will be interested and give more better examples, so that we can both make progress.

The first example that came into my mind is how to explain on weedends. When this phrase appeared in a text, the students at the first sight found its a little different from on weekend. Why is there a s at the end of weekend? They became confused and looked puzzled. If you explain it purelly grammartically, it will be a difficult task, even making them more confused. And if you just translate it into Chinese, it certainly can help the students understand it in a Chinese way but at the same time the students will lose a good chance to understand English in an English way. I did like this: firstly, I tried to help the students undersand on weekend, it would be easier. And then I wrote on the blackboard: weekend +weekend + weekend +weekend+...= weekends and underlined the s with red chalk. Thus, the students immediately understood the phrase correctly and in an English way.

This way is an interesting one because it appears so mathematically and like a game. When a grammar point can be presented in a mathematical way, the students will feel much interested, more intereted than in an usual way in which teacher would explain it in grammaer-translation way or just give a common explanation, which hardly arouses the students interest.

Grammar explanations are generally boring, which is a big cause of students losing interest in English learning. So if we teachers try to make explanations on grammar points interesting, less students will lose interest in English.

Next time, I will write more about it, are you interested in it? If so, please leave a message. Thank you!
