改造一篇英文范文说起

期中考试结束了,作文评讲如何进行。在仔细研究了答案卷给出的范文之后,我发现这个范文存在一些问题,而这些问题,恰恰是我们的学生在写英语作文时容易出现的深层错误。为什么说是深层错误呢,因为这几个问题并不在于词汇与语法的问题,而是在于行文逻辑及谋篇布局,在于文化意识与思维方法的问题。

先看范文:

Dear Mr. Brown,

I’ve learned that two hosts are needed for the coming English speech contest to be held by the English Corner. I’d like very much to be one of them.

I’m Li Hua, a handsome boy of about 175 m in height. As a hardworking student, I have a good command of English, especially spoken English. What’s more, I have been the host of English parties since I entered junior high school, which has given me much experience in hosting big events. In addition, I often talk with my friends in American and England online. So I believe I can do the job perfectly.

乍一看,这个范文似乎没什么问题。但只要进行深层分析,这个范文就不够有范儿了。

首先说,这个范文第一段的写法,带有汉式英语的痕迹。汉语是说我了解到你们有……但英语的写法是一上来就交代自己写信的目的。常用I’m writing to you…的形式,开门见山表达自己写信的目的,而不是绕弯子。这是英语书信中申请信的一个特点。

再看第二段。第二段的中心很明确,就是表明自己为什么适合这个职位或者角色。你看,第一点说到了自己的外貌特征,第二点说到了自己的英文水平,第三点说到了自己的主持经验,最后一点用了in addition又转到自己的英文水平上去了。这就显得自己的表达思路不是很清晰,整段文章的逻辑也不分明了。什么意思呢?第一点说外貌,没问题,但最后一点,显然是用detail来支持自己的supporting idea:我的英文水平足以让自己担当这个主持。整体的main idea放在了最后:I can do the job perfectly.这样调整,才能够形成main ideasupporting ideasdetails的逻辑顺序与逻辑层次。而不是一下子英文水平,一下子主持经验,又转到英文水平的细节上去。整段文章就会显得东一榔头西一棒子。这正是我们中国学生在写英文作文时常犯的一个典型错误:思路不清,层次不明,逻辑混乱。

另外,向as a hardworking student这类表达,汉式英语的痕迹也比较明显。I often talk with my friends in American and England里面也有语法上的小瑕疵,American应该是America,瑕不掩瑜,但既然是范文,这一类小瑕疵还是尽量避免为好。

经过调整之后,我们把这个作文改造一下,就会成为一个比较符合英文思维、文化习惯和逻辑分明的范文:

Dear Mr. Brown,

I’m writing to you to apply for the job as one of the two hosts needed for the coming English speech contest to be held by the English corner. I’d like very much to be one of them.

I’m Li Hua, a handsome boy of about 175 cm in height. I have been working hard at English, so I have a good command of English, especially spoken English. I often talk with my friends in America and England online.  What’s more, I have been the host of English parties since I entered junior high school, which has given me much experience in hosting big events. That’s why I’m confident that I can do the job perfectly. Please give me a chance.

I’m looking forward to your early reply!

教师,在使用教材、教参、教辅资料时,不应该只匍匐在地,一味接受,还得采取拿来主义,放出眼光,自己来拿。一些浅层问题,容易发现;多一些深层问题,就需要深入研究与思考,而不只是停留在表面。或者被教材、教参、教辅资料完全带着走,有时候可能就被带偏了节奏。
