单词iridescent来源于希腊神话，彩虹女神Iris（伊里斯）是希腊神话中宙斯的信使。古希腊人认为，彩虹连接着天与地，Iris就负责替众神向众生传递消息，同时将人的祈求、幸福、悲哀、怨怒、祝福传递给神。

Iris从东飞到西，忠心耿耿、任劳任怨，在天空匆匆飞过时会留下一道美丽的彩虹。所以五颜六色的鸢尾花在英语里就是iris，鸢尾花的花语是“消息”。虹膜决定了人类眼睛的颜色，和彩虹一样多彩，所以古罗马时期的医学家盖伦就把虹膜命名为iris。
