[JULI]I'd never been embarrassed by where we livedbefore. I also never really thought about money. I knew we weren't rich, but Ididn't feel like we were missing anything. Thatis, until Bryce Loski called our home a complete mess.

[例句] It doesn't matter how wellqualified you are, if your face doesn't fit, you don't stand a chance. 资历多好也没用,如果人家看你不对眼,你就不会有机会。

If we try hard, we may still stand a chance ofwinning. 要是再努力点,我们仍有希望赢。

JULI:But he doesn't. And we live here. And it looks so bad.

JULI:The Loskis have been throwing away my eggs because they're afraid ofsalmonella. Because our yard is such a mess.

TRINA:Did Patsy say that?

RICHARD:Trina. Let's not get into this.

TRINA:No, I'm tired of living like this, Richard. I'mtired of having to take temp jobs just to make endsmeet. I'm tired of having to push a chair up against the washing machinejust to keep the door shut. I'm tired of having to borrow Mrs. Steuby's vacuum cleaner every time ours breaks down.

[JULI]That was the first time I ever heard my parents really yell at each other.

[JULI]That night they each came into my room. My father talked about his brother andhow much he loved him and how he promised his parents he'd always take care ofhim. My mother talked about how much she loved my father for his strength andkind heart. When she kissed me good night she whisperedthat of all her many blessings, I was herbest. I felt sorry for my father. I felt sorry for my mother. But most of all, I felt lucky for me that they were mine.

3. most of all 最重要;尤其是

[JULI]I wanted to think the reason I started working on my yard had nothing to do with Bryce. It was about making ourhouse better. After what he did with the eggs, why should I care what hethought? But I did.

[例句] The man hacked a shrub down withan axe. 那男子用斧头砍倒了一株矮树。 

[JULI]We worked on the yard for weeks. And the whole time we worked, we talked.

[JULI]我们在院子里忙活了几个星期,我们一边干活一边聊天。

CHET:Right there?

CHET:就这儿吗?

JULI:Perfect, yeah.

JULI:对,很好。 

[JULI]He wanted to know more about the sycamore tree. He knew exactly what it meantabout the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. He said it was thesame with people but sometimes with people, the whole could be less. I thoughtthat was pretty interesting. I started looking at people I'd known sinceelementary school trying to figure out if theyweremore orless than the sum of their parts. Chet was right. A lot of them were less. Ofall my classmates, the one person I couldn't seem to place was Bryce.Until recently, I would've said with absolute certainty that he wasgreater, far greater, than the sum of his parts.But now I wasn't so sure. 

[JULI]他想了解无花果树。他非常清楚整体胜于部分的总和是什么意思。他说人也如此,只不过对于人,有时候整体反而更小。我觉得很有意思,我开始重新审视从小学就认识的人们,想知道他们是不是整体胜于全部。切特说得对,很多人作为整体反而更小。在所有同学中,我唯一不确定的是布莱斯。要是以前,我会极其肯定地说,他的整体远远好于全部,但现在我不确定了。

[笔记] 1.figure out想出; 理解; 弄清

[例句]Try to figure out what feelingunderlies your anger.

努力找出你的愤怒之下潜藏的情感。

2. would have done 是虚拟语气。表示对过去事情的假设,意为“本来想做;要做但没做”。

3. with absolute certainty 十分肯定,斩钉截铁

4. far 作为副词修饰比较级,表示程度上的更、非常、极等意思。例如: He isgetting far better.

BRYCE:It's looking good, Juli. Nice job.

BRYCE:看起来真不错。朱莉,干得好。

JULI:Thanks. Chet did most of it.

JULI:谢谢,大部分都是切特做的。

BRYCE:I'm sorry for what I did.

BRYCE:我为我的行为道歉。

JULI:I just don't get it, Bryce. Why didn't you just tell me?

JULI:我真不明白,布莱斯,你为什么不直说呢?

[JULI]Was he really sorry? Or was he just saying these things to make himself feelbetter? Then I thought maybe I just wanted him to be more than the sum of hisparts. But as I looked into his eyes… those dazzling eyes… for the first time I was pretty sure that Bryce Loskiwas less.

[JULI]他是真的感到抱歉吗? 还是他这样说只是为了让自己好受一点?或许我只是希望他的整体比部分之和大吧。但当我直视他的双眼,那双明亮迷人的眼睛,有生以来第一次,我第一次确定布莱斯作为整体更小。
