中英文对照:赫拉克里特著作残篇(全)

赫拉克利特的文章晦涩难懂,隐秘玄奥。

赫拉克利特只写过一部总称为《论自然》的书,内容有“论万物”,“论政治”和“论神灵”三部分。可惜这部书没有完全保存下来,我们看到的只是130多个残篇,它们是从不同时期的著作中摘录出来的。残篇的语言多形象比喻,内容多是深奥的道体描述与阴阳辩证法,让人感叹其哲学思想之深邃。

这道(logos)虽然万古长存,可是人们在听到它之前,以及刚刚听到它的时候,却对它理解不了。一切都遵循着这个道,然而人们试图象我告诉他们的那样,对某些言语和行为按本性一一加以分析,说出他们与道的关系时,却立刻显得毫无经验。另外还有些人则完全不知道自己醒时所做的事情,就像忘了梦中所做的事情一样。

Though this Word is true evermore, yet men are as unable to understand it when they hear it for the first time as before they have heard it at all. For, though all things come to pass in accordance with this Word, men seem as if they had no experience of them, when they make trial of words and deeds such as I set forth, dividing each thing according to its kind and showing how it is what it is . But other men know not what they are doing when awake, even as they forget what they do in sleep.

They vainly try to purify themselves with blood when they are defiled with it! - which is as if one who had stepped into mud should try to wash himself off with mud! He would be thought mad, were any man to notice him so doing. Furthermore, they pray to these statues! - which is as though one were to try to carry on a conversation with houses, without any recognition of who gods and heroes really are.

Things grasped together: things whole, things not whole; something being brought together, something being separated; something consonant, something dissonant. Out of all things comes one thing, and out of one thing all things.

The transformations of Fire: first, sea; and of the sea half is earth, half whirlwind ... Sea pours out , and is measured by the same amount as before it became earth.

The wise is one only. It is unwilling and willing to be called by the name of Zeus.

On this logos, also, they are very properly called by Heraclitus remedies, as healing things of a dreadful nature, and saving souls from the calamities with which the realms of generation are replete.

Those who speak with understanding must hold fast to what is common to all as a city holds fast to its law, and even more strongly. For all human laws are fed by the divine one . It prevails as much as it will, and suffices for all things with something to spare.
