词汇量不足是个槛,词汇量上岸的时候又会有新的问题,那就是很多单词很相近,包括词性和意思,因为这时就要应该严格区分它们的用法,否则也看词汇量很大,实则能准确使用的没几个。 在英语中,表“惊讶”常用 surprise,它可作名词或动词,是一个普通用词,指对各种意外或突发的事物感到惊异,可用于好事,如“What a nice surprice!”,意为“真是让人惊喜啊!”,也可用于坏事,例如: It's surprising what people will do for money. 人为了钱什么干不出来,想想真令人愕然。 Surprise 有的时候还带有讽刺意义,是某人认为不足为怪时说的话,也就是发生的事情对某人来说不足为奇,例如: One of the candidates was the manager's niece, and surprise, surprise, she got the job. 求职者中有一个是经理的侄女,结果她被录用了——这有什么奇怪的呢。 因此,surprise 使用起来非常灵活,但在语气强度方面显得不足。其实英语中有很多其他的有类似的意思且语气更强的单词,如 shock,amaze,astonish 和 astound 等等,它们相当于“大号”的 surprise,因此语气更强,其中 astound 的语气比 amaze 和 astonish 的强,例如: Just the size of the place amazed her. 仅仅地方之大就使她十分惊奇。 Old people often have astonishing powers of recall. 老年人往往具有惊人的记忆力。 His divorce astounded his mother. 他的离婚让他母亲大为震惊。 The child's bad behaviour shocked his mother. 这孩子的不良行为使母亲震惊不已。 而一般来说,astonish 较 amaze 常用,特别指某事既使人惊愕又使人羞愧则较常用 astonish,例如: In retrospect, it astonishes me that we avoided a major quarrel for so long. 回想起来,我很惊讶我们这么长时间没有发生大争吵。 |
