Hong Kong

At first, Hong Kong doesn’t seem to make sense. It is simultaneously Western and Asian, both a concrete jungle and an actual jungle, and equally glitzy and gritty.

Make sense:to be clear and easy to understand;这个词还可以这么用:make+ adj+ sense,我们可以说the protest doesn’t make financial sense,换句话说就是做这事划不来,要亏钱的

Concrete jungle:an unpleasant area in a city that is full of big ugly buildings and has no open spaces;随着城市化的飞速发展,很多城市变成了混凝土丛林The sprawling urban development has turned city after city into concrete jungles,几乎千篇一律,毫无特色

Glitzy:

Gritty:showing a difficult or unpleasant situation as it really is;gritty本意是某某东西里面含沙砾,如gritty soil,仔细一想,真相往往像手中的沙砾一样有点硌得慌呢?

But somehow, the city balances it all beautifully, and this unique DNA courses through the veins of every resident and every neighborhood.

Course:作动词时近义词是flow,往往和液体、情感搭配;举个栗子,tears course down her cheeks

You can take a hike before work, have dirt cheap dim sum for lunch, then later indulge at a Michelin-starred restaurant—so don’t forget to pause and take it all in.

Dim sum:点心

Indulge:to let yourself do or have something that you enjoy, especially something that is considered bad for you,中性偏贬的词;具体是褒是贬,还看语境,这里就是褒义词。Teenagers will indulge in mobile games as long as there is WiFi connection这就是贬

Take in:观察、欣赏,如Take in the stunning countryside scenes after a three-hour climb

The fortune-tellers with their street stands. The banners of clothing drying on windowsills. Musicians playing the traditional erhu, a two-stringed violin. The earnest chess players hunched over boards on tables and chairs. Vendors stir-frying woks of hot chestnuts or selling sweet potatoes and duck eggs. A shoe repairman hammering away at his open-air worktable.

In ancient times, the Chinese people used oracle bones to tell their fortune

Earnest: serious

Hunch:to bend the top part of your body forward and raise your shoulders and back。 He stood hunched at the door, lost in thought

Sweet Potato:红薯

Hammer away:to do something with great energy and with all your attention;后面介词跟at

And if you get up by 7 a.m. you can catch a little hush in Hong Kong, and see locals doing tai chi or walking dogs.

Catch:这里相当于discover;catch是个百搭词,比如说catch a glimpse,或者是catch sb with their pants down(出其不意、措手不及)

Hush:a period of silence, especially following a lot of noise, or when people are expecting sth to happen;也可以直接作动词,让别人安静。

Do taichi or walk dogs:
