昨天，美国堪萨斯州出现龙卷风(tornado)，造成1000多所建筑被毁，1.5万人的用电中断。可见，其破坏力之强，危害力之大。以下是美国国家自然地理网上的有关描述：

Their winds may top 250 miles an hour and can clear a pathway a mile wide and 50 miles long.Also known as twisters, tornadoes are born inthunderstormsand are often accompanied byhail. 译文：龙卷风是一种在垂直方向形成的漏斗状高速气旋，中最大风力高达250英里每小时，它可以清空1英里宽50英里长的区域。龙卷风又名twisters, 形成于雷暴天气，通常伴随着冰雹。巨大而持久的雷暴被称为“超级细胞”，孕育了非常具有破坏力的龙卷风。

1. Hurricane n.飓风，暴风。主要形成于大西洋洋面

2. typhoon n.台风。主要发生在亚洲太平洋国家或地区

3. gale n. 大风，狂风。

例如：A gale was blowing from the east.

大风从东面吹来。

4. breeze n.微风。也可以说gentle wind. 强风就用strong wind.

shoot the breeze 俚语，聊天的意思

例如：The scent of the flowers was wafted along by the breeze.

微风传花香。

They expected me to sit up and shoot the breeze with them till one in the morning

他们希望我晚上熬夜陪他们聊天到凌晨一点。

5.gust n.一阵风。

例如：A sudden gust of wind blew her into the arms of him.

一阵强风把她推进他的怀里。

6. blow v.刮风。

例如：When it blows, it becomes dusty. 一刮风就尘土飞扬。

7. head wind 顶风；tail wind 顺风

例如：A strong head wind lashed the sea into waves.
