小满,竟然源自一场人仙虐恋

俗话说,人生最好是小满,花未全开月未圆。说的就是小满时节,万物生机勃勃、风华正茂。

很多人不知道的是,传说中,小满原本是人名,小满节气源自一个人仙虐恋的故事。

传说,人间有个叫小满的少年,遇到了一位名为三新的神女。

三新原本是天上谷神的三女儿,看到小满与乡亲们生活艰难,就从父亲那里偷了一些五谷种子送到凡间。

谁知,三新的善举被值班的天神发现了,并告到了玉帝那里。玉帝为了惩罚三新私自帮助凡人,将她驱除仙籍,打入凡间。

初到凡间生活的三新非常不适应,在小满的帮助下,她逐渐习惯了日出而作、日落而息的日子。三新与小满在这期间结为夫妻。

谁知,好景不长,当地的恶官看上三新,想要强抢三新做小老婆。有天晚上,三新把自己从天宫带来的东西全部交给小满,包括蚕蛹、大蒜和大麦。

第二天,三新被恶官带走。谁知过了一夜,恶官家传出哭声,三新趁众人不注意,杀了狗官。

独自留下的小满按照三新的吩咐将三样东西分给乡亲们,从此每到这个时候,人们就迎来丝绸、大蒜和大麦的丰收。

不明真相的人们为了感念小满的恩情,将这天唤作“小满”。

这虽然是个传说,但反映了我国古代青年男女善良慷慨的胸襟,和永不向恶势力低头的勇气。

“小满”是中国传统二十四节气(the 24 traditional Chinese solar terms)中的第八个节气。这个时期,农作物的颗粒开始变得饱满,但并未完全成熟,因而叫做“小满”,英文可译作Grain Buds。 

In northern China, grains of winter wheat start to fill, but are still not ripen and full. That's where 'Grain Buds,' or 'Xiaoman' in Chinese, gets its name. 

在中国北方,冬小麦颗粒开始饱满,但仍未成熟和大满。这就是汉语中“小满”的由来。

After Grain Buds, the differences in temperature between north and south China gradually decrease, while rainfall increases. Summer gradually becomes the most dominant season.

小满之后,中国南北的温差逐渐缩小,而降雨量增加。夏季逐渐成为占主导地位的季节。

Custom of praying for silkworms 

祭蚕神

The season witnesses silkworms start to cocooning.

这个季节蚕开始结茧。

Silkworms are difficult to feed. Temperatures, humidity and the condition of mulberry leaves, all affect the silkworms' lives. 

蚕很难喂养,温度、湿度和桑叶的状况都会影响蚕的生存。 

It is said that the birthday of the “God of silkworm” falls during this season. To pray for a good silk harvest, people have traditional festivals in parts of east China such as Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. 

据说,“蚕神”诞生于小满。为了祈祷丝绸丰收,在中国东部的一些地方,如江苏、浙江,人们将这天定为传统节日。

Those who raise silkworms would be busy in boiling cocoon and reeling silks at the time. Both silk producers and merchants hold a high expectation for new silk to go to the market.

养蚕的人当时忙于煮茧和抽丝。丝绸织造商和批发商都对新丝绸的上市抱有很高的期望。

In the past, Grain Buds was a time of frequent food shortages, with last season's crops near depletion and new crops not yet ripe.

过去,小满时节常常出现粮食短缺,上一季的作物几乎枯竭,新作物还没有成熟。

Today, people don't need to worry about food shortages anymore. But fresh seasonal herbs and vegetables are still good choices.

今天,人们不再需要担心食物短缺。但是新鲜的时令蔬菜仍然是不错的选择。

Garland chrysanthemum was originally a beautiful foliage plant in European gardens. But after its introduction to China, it became a delicious dish on the table.

茼蒿最初是欧洲园林中一种美丽的观叶植物。但传入中国后,成了餐桌上的美味佳肴。

Garland chrysanthemums become ready to eat during this period. The scented plant is nutritious, rich in vitamins, carotene and a variety of amino acids, and helps increase appetite and lower blood pressure.

茼蒿在小满期间可以食用。这种香味植物营养丰富,富含维生素、胡萝卜素和多种氨基酸,有助于增加食欲和降低血压。

A combination of sweet and bitter in flavor

The flavor for this period of time combines sweet and bitterness.

小满时节的口味是甜和苦的结合。

Cherry is the fruit of summer, as it is the first type of fruit that is ripe as summer arrives. Chinese medicine believes that cherry is moderate and mild in quality, and can help prevent cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

樱桃是夏季水果,它是夏天到来时最先成熟的水果。中医认为樱桃适中温和,有助于预防心血管疾病和癌症。

Eating cherries is also helpful in keeping the skin tender, which makes it one of the most valued fruits for young ladies. The most famous part, of course, is still its sweet and juicy taste. It is definitely the best choice for the beginning of summer.

吃樱桃还有助于保持皮肤水嫩,这让它成为年轻女士最青睐的水果之一。当然,樱桃最为人乐道的还是香甜多汁的口感,绝对是初夏水果的不二之选。

Another suitable dish for Grain Buds has a completely different taste. As is recorded in many Chinese classical books, including the “Classic of Poetry”, bitter herbs are a must during the summer period.

另一道适合小满的菜,味道却完全不同,正如《诗经》在内的许多中国古典书籍所记载的,苦菜是夏天的必备品。

Despite tasting a little bit bitter, the bitter herbs contain diversified vitamins and mineral substances. They are refreshing, and are helpful in soothing emotions and anti-aging. Chinese people have a number of measures to cook the bitter herbs.

尽管尝起来有点苦,但苦菜含有多种维生素和矿物质,令人耳目一新,有助于舒缓情绪和抗衰老。中国人有很多方法烹饪苦菜。

Some pickle them into a sour and sweet cold dish, which goes well with rice, while others boil them in hot water, and turn them into stuffing for steamed buns.

有些人把苦菜腌制成酸甜的凉菜,和米饭很相配,有些人把苦菜放在沸水里煮,然后做成包子的馅料。
