【原】give way 有“垮掉”的意思，但鲜为人知

在英语中很多看似简单的短语的意思却不见得简单，甚至有被错解的可能；除了语法上的构造引起意思的差异这个原因之外，还有一个很重要的原因是很多短语的意思不止一个，如 give way。

短语 give way 的意思之所以那么多是因为 give 和 way 的意思都多，尤其是 way，那么它们的组合就相当于两个集合的笛卡尔乘积，自然而然就有更多的意思，然而有些意思在实际中却很少被使用。

Give 是常见的可以接双宾语的及物动词之一，常用格式是：give sth to sb 或 give sb sth，例如：

请你帮个忙，把信交给奥利弗好吗？

Would you please do me a favor and give the letter to Oliver?

Would you please do me a favor and give Oliver the letter?

短语 give way 也可以套用格式的其中之一：give way to sth/sb，它的字面意思是“给出路”，那么它的基本意思是“让路”，也就是让其他的先行，这里 way 指的是物理上的“路”，例如：

作为文明城市的标志，汽车必须让路给行人。

正确：As a sign of a civilized city, cars must give way to pedestrians.

错误：As a sign of a civilized city, cars must give pedestrians way.

此时挡住别人的路应该用 in the/sb's/... way，表示的是在路里面，而不是 on the way；on the way 表示在去或往什么的路上，或在什么途中等，例如：

The ambulance can't get out of the driveway with an accident in its way.

救护车出不了车道，路上发生了事故。

They had a two-day stopover there on the way to London.

他们在去伦敦的路上在那里停留了两天。

然而我们知道 way 是一个用法非常广泛的单词，它除了可以指物理上的“路”之外，还可以指抽象的“路”等意思，因此 give way 还可以表示抽象的“让路”，也就是让步或退让等，例如：

She is very optimistic about life so she will never give way to difficulties and frustration.

她对生活非常乐观，所以她永远不会向困难和挫折屈服。

The last thing I will do is give way to despair.

我最不愿意做的事就是向绝望低头。

在实际应用中，give way 的实际意思不止这两个，它甚至还有“垮掉；倒塌“的意思，但是却鲜为人知，因为 give 是常见的能接双宾语的及物动词，它的主语一般都是人，例如：

她把票递给了登机手续服务处的女服务员。

She gave her ticket to the woman at the check-in desk.

She gave the woman her ticket at the check-in desk.

然而当 give way 意为“垮掉”等意思时的主语却是物，相当于 break 或 fall down，例如：

We shouldn't lean against the pillar too long—it's liable to get way at any moment.

我们不应该靠在柱子上太久，它随时都可能倒塌。

We felt the ground give way under our feet. 

我们感觉到脚下的土地下陷了。

Give way 至是 way 对应的一个短语，实际的短语远不止这个，常见的还有 in a big way，the other way around，under way 或 in some ways 等等，在实际学习当中要引起重视。
