卡尔·古斯塔夫·荣格（Carl Gustav Jung， 荣格出生于瑞士一个凯斯维尔的村庄。荣格六个月大时，家庭移居到莱茵瀑布边的洛封城堡。父亲是一个牧师。荣格从小受家庭宗教气氛影响，对宗教产生兴趣。但由于他认为其父身为牧师却丧失真心的信仰且无力面对现实，只能讲述空洞的神学教条，再加上他本人在少年时期在领圣餐时心中毫无感觉，不符他的期望，对基督教非常失望。荣格更做过一梦，其中上帝的粪便击碎精美的教堂，因此荣格背离了基督教。 1895年－1900年，荣格在巴塞尔大学学习医学，随后在苏黎世伯格尔茨利精神病院谋得助理医师职位，在布鲁勒手下实习。期间他进行了高尔顿词语联想实验的研究，积累了最初的声誉。荣格1905年任苏黎世大学精神病学讲师，后来辞去职务自己开业。荣格对弗洛伊德1900年出版的《梦的解析》很感兴趣，与之通讯，参加了弗洛伊德的精神分析运动，共同创立了一个国际精神分析学会，并任第一届主席，后因两人的学说产生分歧而决裂。由于此决裂弗洛伊德将荣格的名字一笔勾消。荣格曾任苏黎世联邦理工学院及母校巴塞尔大学教授，又获牛津大学及哈佛大学等颁授荣誉博士学位。1961年6月6日去世。 荣格在与弗洛伊德决裂后曾经忧郁数年。他曾见到幻像也曾感觉到众多鬼魂聚集在他家中。其中一个幻像是一位有翅膀而又跛脚的老人菲利门，另一个幻像是一位美貌的女士。这两位成为他日后老智者（自性）及阿尼玛的样本。 因荣格对宗教毫无忌讳，他对中国道教的《太乙金华宗旨》、《慧命经》、《易经》，及藏传佛教的《中阴闻教救度大法》、禅宗皆深入研究。他也对西方炼金术著迷。他在《太乙金华宗旨》及西方炼金术找到与他个性化观念相同之处：调和有意识的自我与无意识的心性。 他也在解梦方面有杰出成就。梦反映潜意识，是心理学家非常重视的。据他估计，自己一共大约解过80000个梦。荣格的学说与弗洛伊德最大的分别，是他的理论得到较广泛的考察证据。相对于弗洛伊德认为梦是一种被压抑的愿望的隐晦表达，荣格更强调梦具有一种补偿作用。梦不是伪装和欺骗，而是一部用特殊语言写成的书。在梦的分析上，荣格强调不应该仅局限于单独的梦，而是关注梦的系列，着重分析与个人有重要影响的“大梦”。同时，荣格对梦的一些神秘现象也产生了兴趣。荣格按时间顺序把梦分成指向过去的梦（即通常的对过去生活进行回应的梦）、同时不同地的梦（即梦见的一件事正好在现实的某一角落同时发生）和指向未来的梦（即预言的梦）。对于后两者因违反因果律，在当今科学无法得到解释。荣格认为应该用现象学的观点理性地看待，而不是简单地否定排斥。 他曾到非洲及美洲等地对原始人类的心理进行考察，提出集体潜意识这一重要的心理学概念。 他提出内倾和外倾的心理类型。并与思维、情感、感觉、直觉四种功能类型进行匹配。提出了八种人格类型：外倾思维型、内倾思维型、外倾情感型、内倾情感型、外倾感觉性、内倾感觉型、外倾直觉型、内倾直觉型。这种分类法成为以后迈尔斯-布里格斯性格分类法（MBTI）的基本理论。 在他晚年时，荣格在梦中得到启示，回头研究亚伯拉罕诸教。在最满意著作《答约伯》中批判犹太教、基督教的耶和华。也许因个人经历，他批判约伯记中耶和华对约伯的回答。此一充满怨恨苦毒的批判招致宗教界的反对与批评。由于他年事已高，他对这预料中的批评并不在乎。他也认为基督教的三位一体并不完全，欠缺一女性的角色。 荣格是一位学贯中西、著作等身的学者，在世界心理学界都得到了很高的评价。是心理学鼻祖之一。 个性化（Individuation）或译个体化：心灵成长的目标，也就是自我的实现（Self Realization），其方法为融合有意识的自我与无意识中的阴影与阿尼玛或是阿尼玛斯让自我实现。 集体潜意识编辑集体潜意识：荣格认为在潜意识中有个人潜意识及集体潜意识。他考察非洲及美洲等地原始人类的宗教、神话、传说、童话、与梦并比较西方人与东方人的宗教、神话、传说、童话、与梦，发现许多共同的原型而得到的结论。荣格认为集体潜意识是人格中最深刻、最有力的部分，它是几千年来人类祖先经验的积累所形成的一种遗传倾向。这些遗传倾向被称为原型。各种原型在梦、幻觉、幻想、神经症中无意识地表现出来。相对于弗洛伊德的无神论顷向，荣格认为集体潜意识中充满了神的形象。 内向性与外向性编辑荣格是首位定义心理学中“内向性与外向性”者之一。在荣格的著作心理类型学（psychology types）中提到每一个人都属于“内向”、“外向”两种性格。荣格将这两种心理类型以希腊神话中的阿波罗与戴奥尼修斯比较。内向性格者被比拟成通情达理的阿波罗，他们喜欢独处、思考，深思熟虑并且善于自省。内向性格者有时可能对于参与他人的活动不感兴趣。外向性格以戴奥尼斯比拟，他们富有活力、生动并且喜爱参与活动。外向性格的人在意外在世界的感受、物体与行为。外在性格的人极可能于独处时感到无聊。 人格面具（persona）：人们在他人眼中表现出的形象，通常是社会和公众期许的形象。 导论性文本 Jung, Carl Gustav; Marie-Luise von Franz.
