ace表示“A纸牌”，hole是扑克用语，pole card是指“（面朝下的）底牌”，该习语的字面意思是“底牌中的爱司（A）”，用来喻指“something that can supply a sure victory when revealed”，即“（秘藏的）王牌”，有时也用来表示“锦囊妙计”。

【习语运用】

【闲话习语】

该习语最早出现在爱荷华州的报纸《The New Era》（1886年6月）中：

"Thus matters went on until four cards lay in front of each man, face up and one turned down. Not a pair in sight and everyone thought each man had an ace 'in the hole'." 

美国著名电影人柯克·道格拉斯（Kirk Douglas）主演过一部同名电影《Ace in the hole》（倒扣的王牌），柯克在剧中扮演一个来自纽约的记者，他在墨西哥偶然碰到一名店主被困山洞，然后借此机会拖延营救该店主的进程，为的就是保持事件的新闻热度，最终使得店主丧命山洞。
