你手里的砂糖橘是orange、mandarin还是tangerine？

又到了炫砂糖橘的时候啦，网友花式吃砂糖橘也冲上热搜。

可是看着手里的砂糖橘，只有一个“orange”脱口而出？那你知道它并没有橘子的意思吗？

橘子、橙子用英文怎么说？

英文中有很多表示柑橘类的词，但它们之间是有区别的，让我们一一了解一下。

▌orange

在英文中，orange实际上指的是橙子。橙子皮厚，形状圆，有酸味。

Orange has a thick skin, is round in shape, and has a tart flavor.

但是它在特定条件下也可以泛指柑橘类（citrus）的水果。因此，儿童的教科书常常会为了方便记忆而将橘子的英文和“orange”划上等号。

▌mandarin /ˈmændərɪn/

Mandarin才有橘子的意思，它的学名是“宽皮橘”，是柑橘类水果（citrus fruits）的始祖。

如果将首字母大写，这个单词就变成我们所熟悉的“普通话”的意思。

据考证，橘子原产于中国、印度等地，已有数千年的栽培历史，后来传遍欧亚大陆，橘子在荷兰、德国都还被称为“中国苹果”。

橘子呈扁圆形，与普通橙子不同，它的味道更甜、更浓。果皮薄而松，几乎没有白色的中果皮，因此它们通常更容易剥皮。

Mandarins are smaller and oblate, unlike the spherical common oranges. The taste is considered sweeter and stronger than the common orange. The peel is thin, loose, with little white mesocarp, so they are usually easier to peel and to split into segments.

有趣的是，橙子（oranges）是宽皮桔（mandarin）和柚子（pomelo）杂交而来的品种。

Interestingly, oranges are hybrids of two fruits: pomelo and mandarin.

▌tangerine /ˈtændʒəˌrin/

英文中tangerine也经常被用来表示柑橘类水果，是mandarin（橘子）类下面的一个品种（variety）。

有人认为这种品种的柑橘来自摩洛哥丹吉尔市（Tangier），是一个特殊品种。

Tangerines are smaller and less rounded than the oranges. The taste is considered less sour, as well as sweeter and stronger, than that of an orange. A ripe tangerine is firm to slightly soft, and pebbly-skinned with no deep grooves, as well as orange in color. The peel is thin, with little bitter white mesocarp.

柑橘比橙子小而扁，味道少酸、偏甜、更有味道。成熟的柑橘呈橘黄色，捏起来偏硬，表面略微不平整但没有明显纹路。柑橘外皮较薄，中果皮较少而微苦。

总体来说，tangerine和mandarin区别不大，前者更小一点。因此，在日常英语交流中，常常会将这两个词混用，来指代橘子、柑橘。

但是，tangerine和orange却有很大区别。在《生活大爆炸》（The Big Bang Theory）中，就出现区分橘子和橙子的台词：

'I believe the szechuan palace has been passing off orange chicken as tangerine chicken and I intend to confront them.'

“我认为四川菜馆故意用香橙鸡丁来假冒陈皮鸡丁，所以我要去评评理。”

▌clementine /ˈklemənˌtin/

Clementine（小柑橘）是橘子（mandarin）的一个品种，是由橙和橘杂交而来，个头最小。

Clementines are the smallest variety of mandarin. Clementines have a loose skin that makes them easy to peel. All clementines are seedless. The average clementine is slightly sweeter than other mandarins.

小柑橘是柑橘类最小的品种。它皮薄而松，易剥开；尝起来无籽，比橘子更甜。

砂糖橘英文怎么说？

砂糖个头小、好剥皮、吃起来甜甜的、有些还没有籽，真的是一口一个停不下来。过年期间，网友们纷纷感慨，“没有一袋砂糖橘能过夜”。

那么砂糖橘的英文用哪个词合适呢？

根据砂糖橘的外形和味道，它的英文可以说clementine或者small tangerine。

当然，这不是唯一的答案。毕竟，不同国家物产不同，各地区的语言使用习惯不同，这都也会影响用词。

比如说，在英语国家中，人们有时会将柑橘类水果统一叫做orange，而不会细分下去。

People tend to use the word 'orange' to describe any orange-coloured citrus fruit, including all varieties of mandarin, which, in turn, includes tangerines and clementines. 

所以，把橘子说成orange也不是不可以，只要能够顺畅交流就行。
