An reflection on my teaching for thinking quality

Thinking quality, as one of subject-matter cores of Senior High English Curriculum, is an fundamental requirement for the subject. Teaching thinking quality is not easy, since it is a systematic frame which consists of not only the competence of thinking, but also how to think in new environments, as presented by its logic, critical and creative level, thus students will possess ability to analyse and solve problems when necessary.

My teaching design is based on the thinking track above. When I taught the text in lesson 3, unit 6, book 2, Senior High School textbook compiled by Beijing Normal University Publishing House, I first asked the students to skim the text and find what the passage is mainly about. Under the guidance of my instruction, they quickly found in each paragraph a type of advertisement is mentioned. Naturally, they drew a conclusion that the text is about different types of advertisements. I just let it be, and guided them to the journey of careful reading. They read for more detailed information about different advertisement such as types, functions,purpose, disadvantages etc. After all the steps that are necessary for a reading comprehension class, including vocabulary learning, grammar learning, I turned back to the topic: what is the passage mainly about? Using the table on page 60. when they have finished the table, they had to answer the question, how these types of advertisements are arranged in the text? Quickly, they found such expressions as “started with””but then””modern””nowadays”etc. They found the answer to the question that they are arranged chronically, that is, in order of time. So the answer to the question what the passage is mainly about was revised to the development of advertisements, since types of something is combined with the axis. I said to them:yeah, be careful in thinking, if we just take only the different types of advertisement as the table shows, we may dram a conclusion that the passage is mainly about the different types of advertisement,but when we take the time axis into consideration, we may change our minds, types combine with time axis only means development.the next step I took was to write two titles on the whiteboard and ask the question: what would you write if you were given the title to write an article? The first title is : Different Types of Advertisements; the second:Development of Advertisement. They found that when writing the first passage, time is not a necessary factor that should be taken into consideration while time is a necessary factor that must be taken into consideration when writing the second one. For the first passage, you can write different types of advertisements in history or just today’s. And advertisements can be classified into different types based on different criteria. For example, you can, besides writing different types of advertisements in history, chronically or not, write types of advertisements such as TV advertisements, radio advertisements, newspaper advertisements, WeChat Moments advertisements,etc. But in the second passage, your types of advertisement have to be arranged according to time axis.Or, it is not about the development of advertisements.

They were enlightened. And this way,, they learned how to think.
