Barely Legal Grafters, BBC2: Meet the UK’s black market traders, ticket touts, and importers

While we’re all aware of dodgy dealers operating in the UK, a new BBC documentary delves into the people operating in the law’s grey (and not-so-grey) areas.

Barely Legal Grifters follows a host of characters who have their own trade to make a bit of extra money – and occasionally a lot of extra money – on the side.

There’s ticket tout Slim, who has his eyes on the Rugby World Cup (the last time it was in the UK he made approximately £140,000) as his big earner for the year.

“It’s merely sales. It’s a play on words, it’s not really telling un-truths,” he justifies. “We’re not out to rob anyone, that’s the most important thing.

With 35 years of experience in the trade, he seems to find a thrill in what he does.

“It’s almost like taking crack cocaine,” he says. “One minute, bang, you have a great day – and equally, you can have absolutely disastrous days.”

While he’s not doing anything explicitly wrong, it’s undeniably entertaining to see how he operates – even blagging his way behind the scenes of the World Cup by posing as Trading Standards with his friend Teatime.
