【言谈录】当思想不再去看,此时才有观察

The sun was setting in great clouds of colour behind the Roman hills; they were brilliant, splashed across the sky and the whole earth was made splendid, even the telegraph poles and the endless rows of building.  It was soon becoming dark and the car was going fast. The hills faded and the country became flat.

太阳正从五彩缤纷的层云之中缓缓落向罗马山后;那些云朵光彩夺目,洒满了整片天空,而整个大地,连同那些电线杆和成排连片的建筑,也都变得辉煌壮丽起来。夜幕很快就降临了。车子开得很快,群山渐渐隐去,乡间变得平坦起来。

To look with thought and to look without thought are two different things. To look at those trees by the roadside and the buildings across the dry fields with thought, keeps the brain tied to its own moorings of time, experience, memory; the machinery of thought is working endlessly, without rest, without freshness; the brain is made dull, insensitive, without the power of recuperation.

带着思想去看,与不带着思想去看,是两件不同的事情。用思想去看路旁的那些树木和散落在干涸大地上的建筑,让头脑被牢牢绑缚在了它自己那些时间、经验和记忆的锚点上;思维这部机器在无休止地运转着,没有停歇,没有新鲜感;大脑变得迟钝、不敏感,毫无复原的能力。

It is everlastingly responding to challenge and its response is inadequate and not fresh. To look with thought keeps the brain in the groove of habit and recognition; it becomes tired and sluggish; it lives within the narrow limitations of its own making.  It is never free.  This freedom takes place when thought is not looking; to look without thought does not mean a blank observation, absence in distraction.

它不停地对挑战作出反应,而它的反应是不恰当的、不新鲜的。带着思想去看,会把大脑留在习惯和认知的窠臼中;它于是变得疲倦而懈怠;它活在了自己所造的狭隘的局限之中。它从不是自由的。当思想不再去看时,这自由才会发生;不用思想去看,并不意味着一片空白的观察和茫然的心不在焉。

When thought does not look, then there is only observation, without the mechanical process of recognition and comparison, justification and condemnation; this seeing does not fatigue the brain for all mechanical processes of time have stopped.  Through complete rest the brain is made fresh, to respond without reaction, to live without deterioration, to die without the torture of problems.  To look without thought is to see without the interference of time, knowledge and conflict.

当思想不再去看,此时才有观察,而没有识别和比较、辩解和谴责这些机械的过程;这种看不会让大脑疲惫,因为所有机械的时间过程都已停止。经过了彻底的休息,大脑变得清新如初,能够回应而不作反应,活着而没有退化,死去而不受问题的煎熬。不带着思想去看,就是不受时间、知识和冲突干扰地去看。

This freedom to see is not a reaction; all reactions have causes; to look without reaction is not indifference, aloofness, a cold-blooded withdrawal.  To see without the mechanism of thought is total seeing, without particularization and division, which does not mean that there is not separation and dissimilarity.  

这种看的自由并非一种反应;所有的反应都有原因;不作反应地去看,并不是漠不关心、无动于衷和冷酷无情的退缩。不用思想的机制去看,就是完整的看,没有割裂和划分,但这并不意味着没有了距离和差异。

The tree does not become a house or the house a tree.  Seeing without thought does not put the brain to sleep; on the contrary, it is fully awake, attentive, without friction and pain.  Attention without the borders of time is the flowering of meditation.

树并不会变成房子,房子也不会变成树。不用思想去看,并不会让大脑昏睡;恰恰相反,它完全清醒、全神贯注,丝毫没有冲突和痛苦。没有时间疆界的关注就是冥想的绽放。
