Making space for glitzy Shanghai Expo sites and modern office buildings means clearing vestiges of the old city — and the old Shanghainese who live there.

01

Modern Shanghai is a city of contrasts. The view we see most often in news photos is the ultra-modern side of Shanghai, with fancy Shanghai Expo pavilions, giant shopping malls, and the vast new apple store that opened on July 10. But another aspect of Shanghai exists too, although it is quickly being cleared away: old buildings, poorer residents, and reminders of the city’s less telegenic past.

Many of the older residences being demolished, like these lane homes near Yuyuan Garden, were built before 1949. Usually poor Shanghainese or migrant families live here. These girls are sisters from rural Jiangsu province; their father works as a messenger and their mother as a shopkeeper.

A section of old Shanghai row houses is being razed. The former residents typically move to simple homes in the outer suburbs, like Pudong area.

As soon as a family negotiates the compensation payment — typically quite modest — with a developer, the old homes are torn down. The last holdouts in a neighborhood will live amid the rubble, watching the surrounding homes being demolished.

After old buildings are razed, “scrappers” sort through the rubble collecting metal and other parts to sell.
