I wish to study graphic design as it is a simulating subject which enables me to express my creative side and help me contribute to shaping society’s visual landscape. After several changes of life expectancies and goals, now I’m in front of a very important starting point of my new goal. Studying social and organizational psychology in a highly developed and scientifically designed place is my aim now. As common in most of Turkish families that my family have stimulated and grew me in a way that to be a doctor, engineer or a kind of scientific career in the future. Unfortunately, they thought directly the life standards and wealth. They didn’t think enough my characteristics and abilities. Maybe I could be a good doctor or a good engineer even a good manager in anywhere but I wouldn’t be reached the true way of my life. (I haven’t seen such life experiences, so such a rigid saying is actually an exaggeration but that’s my way of thinking.) For this reason I went to a science high school without awareness of restricting my future. Although I could be a sufficient student in all science classes, I wouldn’t be satisfied with the subjects. Therefore, in my high school years I inclined to read books about social issues and attended social activities in the school as many as I can. Choosing a department for university was one of the most difficult things that I had experienced as my family’s great depressions on my choices. Fortunately, I persuaded them and went to the management department of Middle East Technical University. Even in there, I couldn’t have found that I want. Every day I was saying myself I didn’t come here to learn maximize someone else’s profits. Such classes really bored me in there. However, our social psychology and other social science lessons made me more intrigued. Moreover in the Academic Writing class I chose two social issues and I really appreciated with those studies. Those were ?￠a???“the social results of abortion in China" and "a comparative analysis of two techniques of coping with stress". After all in my senior year I decided to be an academician and study social psychology. I gained the scholarship of our Ministry of Education to make master and doctorate in abroad in return to work for the University of Nevsehir(one of the new-opened universities in Turkey). At my university years, I attended several social studies in an NGO which named KADDER (Kulturler Arasi Egitim ve Dostluk Dernegi) or ICEFA (Intercultural Education and Friendship Association). There are lots of activities that this association organized, one of the most important ones is providing university students clean and peaceful dwellings with lower prices. During secondary school I had a prominent interest in the law but as I was unable to follow a GCSE qualification in the subject, it was always an extra curricular one. I was therefore delighted to develop my attraction to the subject more prolifically at college by studying it formally. The main reason for my interest in the subject is its consistent relevance in a constantly developing society and its fascinating evolving nature. In the course of my weekly reading of the Times Legal Supplement I have read many articles which illustrate this and provide me with a burning awareness of the law’s direction and progression. One article which I enjoyed particularly illustrated the concerns of convergence and the law; the way in which the incessant creation of new websites and online networks requires constant new copyright laws to sustain expanding privacy frameworks. This is, I feel, one of the most significant areas to challenge and test legal rules. I also believe that I am most productive and efficient when I am being challenged and I am sure that the LLB would be intensely motivating. I often have the privilege of watching theory being put into practice at the local Crown Courts and my notes act as a credible testament to the interest I profess in criminal law. I believe the subjects I have chosen to study at A level provide me with keen skills of evaluation and literary comprehension. Whilst Media Studies provided interesting breadth, creativity and practical skills to my education, I was particularly stimulated by my other three subjects. English Language, specifically, has helped me to develop a greater linguistic awareness, fluency and confidence. Sociology has provided me with a good understanding of the complexities of culture and society and emphasised the important part the law plays in that. Finally, the A-Level Law syllabus has enthused me and confirmed my protracted curiosity in following a career in this area. In my Law studies I have particularly enjoyed learning about the methods of reform which craft the law and maintain its relevance. I believe I possess the skills that mould a successful lawyer. I am a confident public speaker having led discussions at my old church youth group. I also participated enthusiastically with peers at my college’s weekly Music Appreciation Society, providing me with the breadth of mind to empathize with others’ points of view and consider opinions with care and sensitivity whilst applying my own independent sense of evaluation. I can also remain professional and relate on a formal basis with customers, having exercised this ability with commercial clients at the Salisbury HSBC branch where I spent some time in an office and visiting customers around Wiltshire. My time spent at the Marine Accident Investigation Branch; a civil service which looks over the facts of maritime accidents and draws conclusions on the prospective lessons to be learnt from individual cases, made me familiar with exploring large amounts of information and scrutinizing cases on a subjective basis. Music is a significant interest for me and I devote a lot of my time to my band. We regularly play at venues around Hampshire and spend time in recording studios perfecting our songs. It was learning about the discovery of penicillin that first stimulated my interest in the behaviour and destruction of microbes by the action of drugs; for example antibiotics. Learning about this giant leap forward in medicine and the way it transformed the treatment of disease inspired me to pursue the study of Microbiology. I am also fascinated by the compounds that go into medicines; for example Aspirin which is produced from willow bark. When my family and I first moved to the United States in 1992, I had to make a lot of adjustments. Although I was only a young child, I found it difficult being separated from my friends and my extended family. I did my best to show my parents just how grateful I am to them by working hard in school, taking up extra curricular activities, and helping with everything I could do around the house. Whether it was raising money by selling candy bars to fund a trip to Washington D.C. as a fifth grader, or dealing with the hardships of being part of the first generation in our family to be educated in the US, I poured my heart and soul into all of my endeavors. I must admit, though, that I had not put much importance into education until college. After having dealt with many cases from divorce to immigration, I found a great sense of joy and pride in being able to help people who did not understand English or the laws of this country. Through my internship experience, I learned to value the concepts of equality, justice, and freedom, because I realized just how essential these concepts have been to my own formation as an immigrant coming to the United States–seeking ways to better my life and the lives of my family members. At the same time, I also had to deal with the inequalities, injustices, and restrictions of being a foreigner in a completely new environment. One thing that always kept me going, though, was my love for music. “Where is the Love”, by the Black Eyed Peas, has always been one of my favorite songs, especially because it ties in so flawlessly with my experience and my passion for law. As a child my father always pointed out the glacial features of the mountain as we skied, or the formation of a valley as we drove. Geography has always intrigued me, and from this interest stems my love. Most of my early understanding of how the world was formed was from my fathers’ one-on-one classes or by reading my sisters pocket encyclopaedia. When I began to have lessons solely dedicated to geography my fascination grew. I also realized that by studying the subject properly I had a natural ability. Both the human and physical characteristics of geography fascinate me, from the plate tectonic theory to Ulman-Harris’s land use function model. Over the past several years, I have been on geography fieldtrips to study urbanisation, tourism and river formations. Fieldwork helps me understand how it all works. This is probably why I enjoyed my father pointing out geographical features so much as a child, as it made it seem so much more real. Geography focuses on the present and the future. I think this reflects my character and why sustainability is so important globally and personally. My international background makes me aware of global problems and sustainable development. Developmental Studies contains my favourite aspects of geography; the social, political, economic and cultural. I have studied German, Turkish, basic French, and Spanish. I find it very unnerving to arrive in a country and not be able to communicate and want to continue my study of languages further. Extracurricular Activities: I am involved in a diverse amount of extracurricular activities. The CAS program at our school is very varied. In June 2006 I was fortunate enough to visit a small village near by and set up a library and kindergarten. This place, precisely this depth behind all masks, behind the make-up and the body-vessels we belong to, is what enthralls me and leaves me hanging breathless upon the outlines of my own Path. I would gladly give away a kingdom for the sake of unlocking the secret to even one heart. What is more, I would give my life with all the devotion I am capable of. Choosing to walk down such a Path in life is not something that occurred to me yesterday or the day before. Honestly, I cannot even remember where the roots of this dream of mine may lie. What I do know is, that taking Philosophy and Psychology classes at my high school made me realize that everything that had intrigued me so greatly in the past could be turned into a profession. Helping people to help themselves, searching together with them for the little lost pieces of the puzzle, this is what I define as my calling. By this I mean giving guidance and offering support to the person in question, but in just the right portions, so that they can continue their journey independently and more motivated than ever before. Psychology is what opens the doors towards ever so many human beings with their fates. A diversity to be truly thankful for, and what is more, a diversity I would like to study thoroughly. Because I, as Jack Kerouac, have found this simple truth: "The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time". Without the law, society will cease to exist as we know it. It is of vital importance, and protects individuals from the major power of corporations and the Government. Law is constantly evolving in order to adapt to an ever changing world. It is for these reasons that I believe I should study such an important subject. This year I had the privilege of being appointed Head Girl by members of staff and voted form captain by my peers. These roles give me extra responsibilities and challenges to face, including chairing both the student council and the sixth form committee, and I look forward to these. With regards to my chosen subjects for A level, I wanted to study a diverse range of subjects so to acquire a variety of skills, which I believe are necessary in the study of law. As well as A Levels, this year I took on the extra commitment of Young Enterprise. Forming a business with my peers showed me that compromise is needed in order to work as a team. We rose to every challenge we were faced with and ended up winning the ‘best product’ prize on the Isle of Man. Hard work and dedication were essential to run a successful Young Enterprise company, and I believe the same qualities are necessary for a Law degree. Recently some of my free time has been spent in the Isle of Man Courts of Justice observing the courts in session. I found it fascinating how much responsibility a barrister has, and I feel that I am mature enough to cope with these demands. One of the more high profile cases that I observed was even reported on in the Manx newspapers, which reminded me of how much focus is on law. Since the age of 14, I have had a part time job. I currently work at the bookshop ‘Waterstone’s’. This has developed my maturity and independence. I enjoy working, and feel at a loss in the holidays if I don’t have anything to do. Working at Waterstone’s has also fuelled my love of reading fiction novels, which I find helps me to relax. In October last year I travelled to Liuyang China with a group of students from my 6th form. Here, we visited a school for a week, teaching students English and giving them an insight into Western culture. This trip was an amazing experience, and left me with the desire to help others less fortunate than myself. I believe studying Law will enable me to do this, as lawyers give a voice to those who may otherwise not be aware of their rights and I would like to be involved in legal aid work. After our trip, I participated in a fund raising effort to sponsor a few of the less privileged chinese students to enable them to visit the Isle of Man and London. This was a huge success, giving them an invaluable opportunity to improve their English, as well as the experience to view life in the Western World as they had never left China. A long term interest of mine is dancing. Since the age of 5 I have learnt ballet and tap dancing, passing exams up to grade 6 in both. My commitment to dancing helps me to relax, but at the same time I have to be focused to remember all the routines. As well as dancing I enjoy playing netball for my school team. I find this helps me to work effectively as a team. In the past I have both swam and played badminton for the respective island teams. Due to differing legislation on the Isle of Man, I was able to pass my driving test first time at the age of 16. This acquired skill allows me to go on long drives in the Manx countryside, a pastime which I find very enjoyable. Studying Law will be a challenge that I will relish.
