Let’s face it, one of the duties of a boss is to give feedback and evaluate your performance. Sometimes this criticism is vague and you’re not sure how to respond. Other times, it can be valid especially when your performance does not meet job requirements. No matter the criticism, you still have to learn ways to cope and respond appropriately to your boss’ feedback. Consider these steps

1.Take control of your emotions. Resist the urge to defend yourself, respond sarcastically or give your boss the silent treatment. Remain confident and cool during the discussion.

2Determine if the criticism is unjustified, vague or valid. Unjustified criticism is given when a worker’s performance does not meet the boss’ unrealistic expectations. Vague criticism is usually given when your boss thinks there is a better way of performing the task than the one you are using, and he or she is unclear about the details. Valid criticism requires that you admit that you “blew it”. You actually made a mistake that needs correcting.

3Once you have determined the type of criticism, assess your boss’ intention and how the criticism was delivered. Did he or she give you the feedback one-to-one, or were you put down in front of others? Did your boss operate from good intentions or was there a hidden agenda?

4Decide what you will do in response to the criticism. For valid criticism, offer an apology for your mistake and develop a solution to correct it. Don’t make excuses, beat yourself up, or overcompensate for your error.

5Maintain your dignity and a positive attitude at all times. Allow your boss to express his or her opinion while still maintaining your self-esteem.
