to be born under a lucky star﹕

指一個人非常好運或幸運 (a person to be very lucky)

例如﹕

Bob was born under a lucky star no matter what he tries.

Bob不管做什麼,運氣都不錯。

Mr. B wished (that) he had been born under a lucky star.

B先生希望他能踫到好運。

If Mr. A had had rich parents, he would have been born under a lucky star.

假如A先生有富有的父母,他也許會很幸運。

(假設語態與過去事實相反)

但與to be born with a silver spoon (in one's mouth)意義有點不同,這是指出生在富貴家庭。

例如﹕Mr. Li can afford to buy an expensive house because he was born with a silver spoon. (in his mouth)

李先生買得起昂貴的房子,因為他生在富貴的家庭。

(老美通常不用gold spoon,也把in one's mouth省去)

to be full of oneself﹕

指一個人對自己很自滿,自負或自視過高(to be conceited; over-estimate one's own ability or opinion)

例如﹕

Knowledge is too broad for anyone to be full of oneself.

知識太廣闊了,任何人都不該自負驕傲。

Right after getting a high-paying job, Mr. Chen has been (so) full of himself.

陳先生得到一份高薪工作後,就很自高自大。

(so只是加強語氣)

If you pamper your girlfriend too much, she may be full of herself.

如果你太寵你的女友,她也許就很自傲。

註﹕這句片語不是對自己說的,而是對他人的觀感。

To be (all) Greek to someone﹕

指某人對某事物很難了解(something difficult for someone to understand)

(多半用在肯定句) (也有人把all 省去)

例如﹕

In order not to be all Greek to someone, we better write this letter with short and clear sentences.

為了讓人不難了解這封信,我們最好用簡短易懂的句子來寫。

The theory of Dr. Wang's lecture was all Greek to many people.

王博士演講的理論,許多人很難了解。

Mr. A's writings have always been all Greek to me.

A 先生的寫作,常令我難以理解。

to be set on (或upon) something﹕

指決心去做某事 (be determined to do something)

例如﹕

You can be successful as long as you are set on something.

只要你決心做一件事,你就能成功。

Sino-American relations can be highly improved if the two leaders will be set upon cooperation.

假如兩國領袖決心合作,中美關係將會大大的改進。

Over the past many years, I have been set on writing articles for the World Journal.

過去多年來,我決心為世界日報寫稿。

to be a slave to something﹕

受到某種事情的影響或控制 (under the influence or control of something)

例如﹕

I will never be a slave to fashion trends.

我絕不受時尚的影響。

Mrs. A has been a slave to expensive jewelry.

A太太受到貴重飾物的影響。

Judging from the way he looks, Mr. B could have been a slave to drugs.

從外表來看,B先生可能已經受到毒品的控制。

(2)be 動詞後面跟介詞at, in, on, up, under﹕

to be at a (或the) crossroad(s)﹕

指對某種決定處於抉擇時刻或緊要關頭 (a turning point in one's decision)

例如﹕

Mr. B is at a crossroad on getting a divorce.

B先生對離婚這件事,處於抉擇時刻。

(crossroads 在這裡有單複數意義。現在一般人多用at a crossroad或at the crossroads)

Some politicians in Taiwan may have been at the crossroads regarding the one-China policy.

台灣一些政客對一中政策也許處於抉擇之中。

Ed is being constantly at a crossroad between two girlfriends.

Ed常在兩位女友之中猶豫不決。

Elderly Chinese sometimes are at the crossroads as to whether to remain in the U.S. or return to their homeland.

是留在美國或返回祖國,老年華人中有時經常進退兩難。
