BEIJING, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- More than 7,600 people will compete for one job at China's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), making it the most sought after role during an annual civil servant recruitment drive.

Between Oct. 15 and 7 a.m. on Wednesday a total of 1,121,530 people submitted applications and qualified to sit exams to compete for more than 20,000 posts, according to a report by Huatu Education, a training company focusing on civil service applicants.

In total, 7,645 had applied for the role at NBS as of 7 a.m Wednesday.

As many as 214 posts have not yet been applied for. The online application channel closes at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Civil servant posts are sought after as they are stable jobs at a time when the job market has become increasingly tough.

"Hot posts are fervently applied for because of the relatively loose application requirements and good impression of the position," said Yu Hongze, an expert with the exam.

Some posts are not favored by people because graduates do not have the required experience. Also, those who have experience do not want to work in remote areas as the role does not meet their expectations, Yu added.

In 2011, a single vacancy in the National Energy Administration attracted 4,961 qualified applicants.
