The world's biggest book stands at the foot of Mandalay Hill in Mandalay, Myanmar. It has 729 marble stone slabs with Buddhist canon inscriptions on both sides as book pages. Each stone slab has a small pagoda erected over it. The 729 small white pagodas stand around a central golden pagoda, the Maha Lawkamarazein Kuthodaw Pagoda, on 13 acres of land. The pagodas were built during the reign of King Mindon. The inscribing on the 729 marble stone slabs of the Buddhist canon was started in 1860 and completed in 1868. In 2013, the Maha Lawkamarazein or Kuthodaw Inscription Shrines were included in the UNESCO's Memory of the World Register. At present, the stone inscription has become a national treasure of Myanmar, and a precious part of the Buddhism cultural heritage in the world. |
