In response to many people wanting to knowhow I make the Earthan Beds work, here is a break down with a bit more detailon how to get it right when connecting them to your aquaponic system athome.  The Earthan Bed is an incredibly effective growing combination forthose with aquaponic type gardens or grow fish.

As you can see from the above picture theyare a very simple garden bed to build.  I have said before, they aresimply a wicking bed created by Collin another ingeniousAustralian!  Another way to think of them is a constant flow gravel bedwith a media barrier and topped with soil.  Simple yes?

The abovedrawing has been modified from our builds to suit any grow bed/tank, be it on bessablocks raised or  directly on the ground.  If youare putting these directly on the ground as we build them with iron wrappedaround them, you will need to use a liner (preferably LDPE) and modify yourbottom fittings to suit.  As you can see from the image below.

If you are usinga liner, you will want the liner to come up the walls to just above the depthof the water so if they do get rained on they overflow.  If you are usinga container that has a bottom such as a tank or trough, you will want anoverflow just above the water line if the beds are out in the rain.
如果你用防滲膜,注意要将防滲膜鋪至牆沿,比最高水位稍高,這樣水不會在下雨天溢出。如果你用一個有底容器比如水池或水槽的話,你需要個溢流裝置,這樣的種植床就可以放在室外了。
The depth ofeach layer does not appear to be significant, though depending on what soil youuse we have found 300mm of soil works well.  The water comes to the top ofthe gravel, which can be any depth you like.  I prefer to have a largevolume under the soil because the beds do generate significant amount of heatthrough the break down of nitrogen and carbon in the soil itself.

The gravelsubstrate can be almost anything at all.  We use a large 40mm river mix(we did not clean it!).  I have used 20mm blue metal drainage(BasinView) with great results but find the larger the gravel the betterthey flow.  Especially over large distances in the earthan beds betweenthe inlet and outlet.   We have never been concerned by vinegartesting the gravel and dont really mind if it contains some limestone as thebeds do need a large amount of carbon to get them ticking along correctly.  Though avoid going out of your way to add limestone onmass.  Stick with a large, smooth (for the sake of the liner) gravel orroad base and like I mentioned drainage gravel.

On top of thegravel you will need some type of media barrier.  We have used geotextilefabric in ours however during heavy rainfall, the beds wash down the soil fromthe surface and clog the fabric.  I would look to a 70% shade clothto reduce the risk of this happening.  It is not a great concern but ifyou have some of your water getting above the fabric it will overflow and yourun the risk of draining your system or worse flooding your beds…

I have found avery thick layer of cardboard on top of the media barrier, under the soil worksextremely well to keep the carbon level high.  Keep in mind you arerunning nitrogen rich water from the fish through the bed constantly. Make the cardboard layer as thick as you like, even up to half the depth of thesoil.  We gathered our cardboard from the local supermarket for freebundled up ready for the trailer.  The cardboard layer in this gardenlasted about 6 months before it turned into a light and fluffy humus.  Inthe mean time we had already added straw mulch to the surface which was coveredwith more soil as the original layer compacted down following the first crop.

The soil mix isvery important (as is all of the media).  Itend to avoid the straight up landscape suppliers “garden mix” or “premiumgarden mix” as they often come chocked up with fertilizer and animal wastes youmay not want in the garden at an early stage.  Way too muchnitrogen in other words and remember there are fish swimming in this somewhere.  My preference, if you have time and planned well, to make up yourown compost soil.  If that is not available to you, some landscape guyswill mix the soil selection for you.

We have hadgreat success with 30% sand (loose not packing sand) and get the goodstuff,  30% mushroom compost and 30% quality garden soil.  Squeezethe soil in your hand, if it clumps too much when you drop it, selectanother.  To that we add a bag or so of shell grit to elevate the carbonlevels and offset the acid that forms through the microbes in the soil.

The heat generatedwith a good soil mix makes them very suitable to cold climate growing regionswhere you use the fuel in the soil, in the grow bed, to help heat the waterrunning under it.  If you want it warmer, add more nitrogen to get it toburn, while being conscience of the nitrogen:carbon ratios that are ideal forgrowing your plants.  A C/N ratio of 20:1 will see you with a goodcomposting soil which will create excellent humus for your plant growth.

The surfacemulch is a really important step in building these Earthan Beds.  It willhelp retain the heat and encourage the capillary action of the water throughthe soil and help prevent the surface from caking and drying out.  Whileany type of mulch is great, sugar cane works very well as does Lucerne, thoughwe found there was no guarantee the lucerne did not come with its ownaccompaniment of weeds which shoot through later.  Where as the sugar canemulch is usually burned before harvest and limits the opportunity to encourageweeds you do not want.  The point of container gardening is to raise theheight but more importantly reduce the need for weeding.
表層的覆蓋物也是構建Earthan種植床的重要一環。它能幫助我們保溫,加強毛細作用,還能防止表層結塊和變幹。任何類型的覆蓋物都很棒,甘蔗和苜蓿一樣好,雖然我們發現苜蓿并不能确保雜草不會在之後冒出來。甘蔗在收割前往往會被焚燒,能夠限制雜草爆發。從容器的角度來看,提升高度更大的意義在于能使環境更加不适合雜草生長。



You will want torun the system for a week before adding fish to the tank.  The water willbe dirty but will clear up very quickly if you have your set up right. That will give you time to check the water parameters over the week to be sureit is satisfactory to your fish.  If it is not right, avoid trying tochange it, the system will work it out one way or another.  Just keep itrunning.  There is no great need to “cycle” the system as the soil willcontain all the nitrifying microbes you can handle and will leach into thegravel substrate where your water flows very quickly.
