WHO #GetHealthy Campaign Goes Underground with 3D Stairs Installation!

Remember our video that challenged you take the stairs? We wanted you to get healthier by increasing your daily physical activity through simple choices! Today, the World Health Organization took our online #GetHealthy campaign underground!

To encourage commuters to take the stairs instead of the escalators at subway stations, WHO and Beijing MTR Corporation  Limited (BJMTR) jointly launched the M Physical Activity Initiative inside Jin Tai Lu station.

Subway commuters heavily prefer taking the escalator to the stairs even during rush hours when the escalators are overwhelmingly crowded. At Jin Tai Lu, the transfer station between Line 14 and Line 6, only 30% of commuters take the stairs during rush hour. During non-rush hour periods, the percentage is even smaller - only 10% of commuters choose the stairs.

BJMTR designed a 3D interactive staircase at Exit E of Jin Tai Lu to advocate for healthier lifestyles by encouraging commuters to take the stairs over the escalators.  The 3D staircase was inspired by 'Jack and the Bean Stalk' and has already attracted the attention of commuters. Many of them walked up the stairs to experience and take photo of creative poses on the innovative installation. Some expressed their plans to rely less on escalators and use the stairs at subway stations as an opportunity to stay physically active during their busy days.

“Physical activity is one of the keys to living a healthy life - and protecting against noncommunicable diseases like heart disease and cancer. Getting enough physical activity doesn't mean running a marathon: it can come from simple decisions we all make every day, like taking the stairs instead of the elevator; walking instead of taking a car or the bus, ” said Dr Bernhard Schwartl?nder, WHO Representative.

Now that there's a new and exciting reason to take stairs, keep working those leg muscles and glutes every day!

About #GetHealthy
The #GetHealthy campaign was launched by WHO to tackle the rise of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). In China, 80% of deaths are due to NCDs, many of them from preventable causes. Living a healthy lifestyle through every day choices such as getting enough physical activity, eating healthier and not smoking will reduce your risk of NCDs.
